I had a friend round this afternoon with her Lab and we sat drinking tea and scoffing ginger biscuits and her dog is very needy and attention seeking. The Lab was constantly nudging her and everytime she bent over to stroke her the dog licked her face.

So I was wondering do you allow your dog to lick you and if so would you let them lick your face or just your hands or are you not bothered.

mine are quite licky, and I dont mind a certain amount but they do know when no means no with me! The terriers will push it with other people and lick them as much as they allow!

This is one major bug bear of mine - I can't stand owners who allow their dogs to do this. Obviously if it's their dog licking their face it's up to them, but I really can't stand other people's dogs licking hands/face/jumping up at me. It's certainly not hygienic and it really makes me squirm when I see people letting their dogs lick young children's faces and share ice creams with them. Yuck yuck yuck. Parasite heaven.

Zak likes to just smush his nose against my hand in passing. I've taught him a 'kiss' command which means a lick on the nose. :o Bear likes to wash ears. Brig is obsessed with feet and would lick for ever if allowed, but I discourage that! He also likes morning breath!

Don't do face licking, & my dogs have always known that other than the odd forgetful hand lick its not on. But my daughter does encourage him to lick her hands now she's older as it apparently tickles, with the command 'hands' & an outstretched palm. As she washes her hands after & its an unlikely command for a stranger to give him I don't mind.

Toby is a licky dog which is cute, however what really annoys me is that my mum lets him lick and lick her hands until he mouths her. I have told her over and over again not to let him lick as I don't want him to be encouraged to 'mouth/bite' hands. She said that you are meant to let them like so they trust you? Anyway, I don't let him do it to me and he knows that but as soon as he sees her he's all lick lick, chew, grrrr. He will also lick faces and loves to clean ear holes out! Something again which I don't encourage as I don't want him to chew my face!

Please god tell me you don't allow him to do that with anybody other than yourself? I know you say you discourage it but how much? That sort of behaviour would be stopped IMMEDIATELY if it was me - and my mother would be told under no uncertain terms not to encourage anything of the sort. Licking ear holes and faces? I seriously hope you mean other dogs rather than human? If you mean human than I am sorry but that is absolutely disgusting and disrespectful of other people - not everyone likes dogs shoving the nose and tongue all over their face and ears I'm afraid - just like some people don't want to stand near a horse or be slobbered on by them. The way I view it is - if you clearly saw someone not enjoying your horse encroaching on their space, you would move your horse. So why the hell not do the same with dogs? I don't want someone else's dog trying to lick my face - I don't know what the hell they may carry or do.

errr I am not sure how you read my post - but I did say that I do not encourage it and I also said that I was annoyed that my Mum is the person who encourages him by letting him do it, whereas I have clearly laid down the law on it not being acceptable. Jeez I was just commenting on OP's question. And FYI no my dog does not go up to random people licking them, he knows better than that. Other people have commented it on being cute, he tries to lick (i.e. stands there looking happy and licking his lips sort of thing) but unless they encourage him he does do it to them. It makes my skin crawl so he doesn't even attempt to do it to me. I can't see why you have picked on me in particular, not Vislak who admitted to having licky dogs too.
Plus Toby is a Miniature Poodle x so unless you are putting yourself down to his level and encouraging him you really are quite safe. Sigh...

The other morning when I woke up and yawned Darcy licked my tongue, omg I couldnt get out of bed quick enough to clean my teeth and have a good rinse with mouth wash.:( My daughter had left my bedroom door open and Darcy had sneaked in and waited until I woke up so was not best pleased with my daughter:rolleyes:.

I must admit I dont like it one bit, what other people allow their dogs to do is entirely up to them but my dogs know I dont like it and dont normally do it to me anyway.

HAHA that made me laugh!

I hate it when people's dogs lick my face it's horrible!! I am quite sensitive with allergies and I am ok round dogs or cats but if they lick me I have to wash my hands a lot or if I touch my face (especially eyes) they will itch, it only highlights how gross it is for me!

My friend has a pug that gets all up in your face and licks your hair like a grunting little maniac (it makes me feel sick how they can't breathe very well although I know its not their fault!) it baffles me how out of control most dogs I meet are!

dont do dogs licking faces, YUK!

my dog gets very demanding and will sit and whine (she is doing it now as i am ignoring her, she wants to get up on the bed). She will occasionally nudge your hand and maybe lick you to get attention but otherwise she is really good. she will sometimes stick her nose on your ear, she loves ears for some reason. but she knows not to lick faces.

I am glad I ate my tead beofre reading that:eek::p (yack)

If your gonna let your dog lick your face on a regaular basis you may aswell skip the face licking and lick it's arse:p:D

Dogs licking my face is the only no no I have with them. Everywhere else is fair game but I don't want tongues on my face

Don't like licking generally, only as doesn't seem overly hygienic.

Lol I started a thread recently about attention seeking, seemd to be quite a pattern with labs, although knowing their food obsession do you think maybe it was the ginger biscuits that were the attraction:D

My setter likes to 'nose' things rather than lick,is 'orrible when it's really cold and not expecting it!!
He does do the feet licking though, especially my teenaage sons feet. Can't leave them alone, will even try and pull his socks off to get at them lol. Can't imagine what could be attractive about them I'm sure!!

Mine aren't licky at all! The terrier will occasionally give you a sloppy 'kiss' but I can't be doing with needy dogs/people/horses/anything breathing frankly.:)
