My mare has been on box rest now for 2 weeks and the past couple of days iv noticed she's started to lick the walls?! She has access to water, Himalayan lick, snack a ball thing and hay 24/7 along with a hanging swede ;) so in assuming it can't be boredom (although I guess I could be wrong!!) the stables are traditional so just brick, no breeze blocks ect.. Does anyone know what she's trying to gain out of kicking the bricks or is she just a bit... Special?

Are the treats being used ? You could take one down and try something different . Its like children having all their toys all the time , nothing is new . Check the feed she is getting , is it balanced . Mine are starting to nibble at bark off the fence posts so I'll need to see what they need ... selenium I think when they chew wood .... I'll have to check !

Mmm possibly .. I will try to vary it a bit, I know she uses the treat ball as all of the nuts are gone by the evening when I go to put her to bed skip out ect in the evening.. As for feed balance she's on pink power and then the himilayan salt like for salt as and when..

Maybe she just likes the feel of brick?

My filly licks anything and everything. People, walls, floor, cows, doors, whatever is left hanging nearby, the trailer, the car...

I often wonder if she's missing a frontal lobe. It's gradually getting less as she grows... But still resorts to "tongue" exploration when faced with something new. I wonder how the sheep will feel when they arrive...?

As an aside... Seriously speaking, those Himalayan salt licks are not what the hype cracks them up to be... The salt content is very variable, mineral content is neither here nor there and could contain harmful minerals. The best licks to have are the formulated ones. Rockies or pure salt is much better. If you insist on rock salt, the red rock harvested from America is much better and is more consistent in its mineral profile.
