Ben has this odd habit of licking wood after he has eaten. He's only really done it since he came back off loan, or at least I never noticed it previously.
I've had him on low cal balancer over winter, thinking it might be a deficiency in something, but it hasn't stopped him and now the babies are copying the behavior. He is eating the willow as the buds are coming through and licking the fence posts more often.
He doesn't get a lot feed wise as he isn't in work and carries weight easily. balancer, handful of pony nuts in a treatball and adlib hay in the field. He lives out 24/7. My soil is sandy and poor quality (although improving). They have a couple of different salt licks in the shelter, which they all use.
Googling only really brings up chewing and cribbing which he isn't doing. Vet has been out to do jabs and I've run it past her but she said it was probably behavioral, but I'm not convinced.
He's an anxious little sole, but we keep everything pretty calm and consistent and he isn't pushed outside his comfort zone at all really.
What could he be lacking which would make him lick wooden fencing?
