Life after colic surgery

Hi just wondering if anyone has a horse that has had colic surgery and gone onto compete and have a fairly normal life. Just that mine had it about 4 weeks ago and hopefully once the recovery period is over I should be able to start riding her again. I know she will probably have to have a careful management in the future but would be nice to know that horses do go on to be able to compete again.
 
Pony on my yard had colic surgery 2 years ago and he's leading a "normal" life now.

She rides him out, not sure if she's jumped him but she did show him in hand and he got in the ribbons.

He has a carefully monitored diet but he's still as cheeky as ever.
 
My horse had double colic surgery, 12' intestine removed. He was back competing 4 months later, he had qualified for the winter champs this week (Dressage). I have also jumped him at home and taken him all round the country competing him and stabling away.

He is now 7 and (touch wood) has shown no symptons for 3 years.

My word of advice would be feed little and often. My guy has 3 or 4 feeds a day, and hay. He NEVER gets any form of treat, not even an apple or carrot.

I found Baileys very helpful with his feeding.

my horse had colic surgery and made full recovery and no further colic.managed to jump out of field during her recuperation despite a stomach full of staples so think theyre quite resilient.
 
Thanks everyone. I feel very pleased now that she will be ok. Everythings gone well so far and shes not the type to get stressed, she just takes everything in her stride and is now nearly a month since the surgery.
Taylored Equestrian - I am so pleased you are competing Bill just 4 months later, he looks amazing!

worked as a veterinary nurse when I was in still in England, lots of horses went home to a normal life, one in particular who had a lengthy op and a long recovery ended up returning to point to pointing ... and winning ! .. good luck and hopefully everything will be good with your horse.
