Have reached the point where my third Terrano is ready for a quieter life. Need something similar, needs to tow trailer and two horses. I don't want a Disco and they stopped making Terranos after 06 as far as I can see. Any recommendations please?

Ah how sad. I had three Terranos then moved onto Jeep Cherokee and now had two. Both autos and love them. I gather there could be problems with the tow hitch of the older ones tho, there is a lengthy thread on this.
The other I looked at was the Kia Sorrento, which looked good but not actually used one.

I'm going to have the same problem eventually as my Fourtrak is not going to last forever. Want something with a low range box that's not too big and they just don't seem to want to make vehicles like than anymore :(

I was in this dilemma with my beloved Fourtrak too. (They stopped making Fourtraks around 2001 so a few years before Terrano's ended).

The only thing which looks remotely like my Fourtrak in terms of similar simplicity/lack of electronics and massive towing ability is a Defender, but they're massively overpriced and extremely sought-after by thieves and are renowned for reliability issues, although their simple design and availability of parts should make repairs easier than with other makes...

I tried a Sorrento (didn't like the clutch but realise Sorrentos also come in auto version). I tried an older LandCruiser (huge battleship). I tried a Rexton (modern huge battleship full of electronics and possibly difficult/expensive to get parts for).

Having viewed a couple of "stunning" and "mint" Fourtraks, I realise there is now no such thing as a 20 year old non-rusty Fourtrak, and my own Fourtrak is one of the better examples.

Then I found a Daihatsu specialist (Atkinson Automotives, in Derbyshire) who specialise in Fourtraks, know them inside-out, do mechanicals, cosmetics, rebuilds, refurbs, etc.

So the money I was going to spend on a 2nd-hand car of unknown history, I am now going to spend on my own genuine Fourtrak instead. It's booked-in with them to have various mechanicals and a bit of cosmetics done which will take about 3 weeks.

Maybe you can find Terrano specialist?

we've just bought an old Terrano! 3 litre diesel - its fab! Thumbs up from me for a grand cherokee, and kia sorrento (both auto). Had both for towing and no issues with either, although given the choice i'd go for the cherokee any day.

Thanks everyone. Did look at Sorrentos and Defrnders. Don't think Sorrento has enough towing capacity, I have 510 trailer and two horses. Don't usually take both as one is the size of a young mammoth.
Defender would do but is so basic and I need the vehicle to take aged relatives out in so need some comforts. Good thing about Defenders is they do tend to hold their price.
Have thought of Pathfinder but they don't get good reviews, was encouraged to hear you say you love yours Lovescobsmass.
Please keep the ideas coming as I am keen to sort it asap.

what's wrong with Discoverys? I tow my 510 and two hefty horses with my 63 plate Disco and it's amazing, dont even know you've got the trailer on the back.

Didn't have anything against them until I started searching and have had nothing but bad feedback about reliability and cost of repair. Glad yours is well behaved, but was but off by all the negative reviews I saw.

ah, the repairs etc on our are paid for by Land Rover themselves so i never have to deal with that side of it, but tbh we havent had any problems with any of the Disco's we've had. We're currently waiting on them to build our next one, excited!

SWB Shogun for me all the way. Had a fourtrak then 2 discoveries and now had the Shogun for 18 months. It's automatic, tows like a train, doesn't get stuck. A bit heavy on diesel but now we've got one we tend to see an awful lot about round us (Rural Wales) and there's not many on the market and I always say that is a good sign

After 2 much loved Terranos I finally bought a Ford Ranger a few months ago. Bit costly but 2 big 17hh in the back and you can barely feel the trailer :-) Definitely the right choice

I've just bought a Sorento to tow with. I have an Equitrek and will often take 2 horses though haven't towed with it as yet. Mine is the 'Titan' model and has a 3 tonne towing capacity. I've heard lots of good things about their towing abilities.

We bought our Disco because it is easier for my Mum to get in and out of than our Defender 110. The Disco replaced my Galaxy which was stolen in April. It's a 52 plate, so not in the first flush of youth. Tows well, is reliable. Like any vehicle it's about getting a good one to start with, and then doing some preventive maintenance (unlike the many who drive until the vehicle stops). When looking for any secondhand car, first of all we look at the car and check it is solid. If the car looks good, we look at the service history. I'm not so fussed about dealer stamps - I want to see that it's been through the MOT on time each year, have any advisories been rectified, the service bills and what has been done. Check that all of the electrics work, do some reading and find what are the issues to look for. Get a mechanic you know to look the vehicle over.

Good luck in your search, but don't write off Discos without trying them yourself.

Sorry to hijack but I have been considering a SWB Terrano, would you recommend?

I have a LWB Terrano and it is very good, drives like a car, tows like a Defender and is just as good off road - I fetched over a tonne of wood on a trailer out of a VERY slippery forest track last week with mine. I would have doubts about the rear space in a SWB, and it depends if it has the 3ltr engine?

Merc ml? The brand new ones don't have the capacity any longer but the 5 yr old ones tow 3.5ton.
I love my mums ml and it happily towed an ifor with 2 in it all round the country

Oh heavens, what age have you bought???

We bought a brand new one in 2012 to tow our IW511 with a 12hh pony in. Also our 1800kg caravan. And while the pulling power was there the stability wasn't. At just 50mph our trailer wagged and took the car with it. We sold it after just 6 months. That said the older ones have a heavier chassis and I think they have done something with the newer ones now.

We use VW transporter (can't get better stability than one of these) or our LWB Shogun or the L200.

Out of the 3 towing vehicles we have the shogun can tow the most weight at 3500 kg but the transporter is most stable and economical.
