My horse is having a molar out tomorrow. I feel really worried about this, it seems like such an invasive procedure. I seem to find quite a few complicated stories, so wondered if people could share positive experiences of the procedure (standing sedation) and what impact that has had on their horse in the long run.

Is the tooth being taken out through the face?

My boy had a cracked molar taken out in two pieces at 6 month intervals by my ED.

Only change is teeth now checked every 6 months instead of 12.

I knew a horse nearly 30 years ago who had a tooth taken out, I can remember walking him in-hand to let him out of his stable for a bit and he nearly dragged me off my feet, and started bucking and hooning around!

From what I remember he recovered well and was being ridden again a few weeks later (or it might have been months!)

Hope all goes well with your horse!

they are going to try and take it out orally by wiggling, but as molar 10 it may not/probably won't be successful, so expecting a GA in the next few days- unless our luck changes and they can get it today.

Thanks for your messages...

My lad had 2 molars removed at 4yrs old. He was poorly after for a while, and I left him til 6yrs to break in. However, apart from regular dentist visits he's none the worse and will be 16 this year!

Only thing is, because he had 2 taken, he does rather a big dent in his head.

thanks for all your messages. It went well and the tooth came out in 1 piece orally by wiggling. I'm so pleased that luck was on our side (it's been a long year of "issues"). Once extracted they found 2 holes in the pulp (?) that you can put a needle up from surface all the way to the root.
The horse is doing well and was happy to eat the same day/night. I saw her yesterday and she's quite happy. Hopefully she can come home tomorrow. I think the plan is straight back into work to help mucus production so she can flush the sinuses herself. If she can't, then she's being threatened with a hole in the head (to flush manually by vets).... fingers crossed!!!!

brite_star - were the 2 molars in the same "set" (ie both on right upper) or different places? I understand removing more than one molar from the same area can destabilise the other teeth present.
