Start of the season with my new eventer... all is going well. Entered the competitions and created a season plan... next thing i know she has a slightly filled, warm left foreleg! ahhhh not what i need! She is the horse im hoping to take all the way to the top (eventing wise) and i do not need a ligament/tendon injury to stop that! Ive had the vet out who said box rest and bute for a few days then a scan... what else can i do? is this going to end up being a long term issue? will she still be able to do top level eventing, hunting, team chasing??

ANY ADVICE?!

Yes, here's some advice... calm down and have a hug. Wait for the vet to scan and see what it is first. If vet confirms an injury then he will go through every option with you.

It will be a long haul perhaps but they recover. The mare I rode last year split her tendon in July but is ready now to go back into work. 9 months and hard work has I think really helped her chances... she is 19!!!

If your young eventer has an injury, the chances are high she will make a full recovery but just wait and see what happens at the scan and you can only go from there.

Obviously, be prepared for WCS's, and that the prognosis may not be what you want to hear. You can only see what happens.

In the meantime, keep cold-hosing the site as often as you can. We use to use gel-packs you pop in the freezer and put it on over a thin towel, and wrap in a neoprene boot for 10 mins at a time.

What a pain in the rear.

There is nothing more you can or should do. The scan will tell you the extent of the damage and the steps needed to recover.

It could be a small tweak that will come right in a month or two, or a major problem that will need many months. It is crucial you listen to your vet team.

My horse had a patch of heat and a small patch of swelling on a hind in August 2011, barely lame. Scan revealed a large hole in his hind check. He stayed in the box until July 2012, then a small paddock until the weather took over and he went back inside, he was finally turned out today. He looks sound but will never return to competitive work.

I have not told you this to frighten you, but just to illustrate that a tiny bit of heat can be much more than meets the eye. Good luck with the scan and listen to your vets.

Might be a big issue, might be a tweak that will have no effect beyond a few days. given your plan have it scanned and go from there
