For horses that have soundness issues due to breakdown / old injuries (rather than arthiritis etc) do you think it is fair to give them a pain relief (e.g. bute) and lightly hack for say 1 hr once a week, mainly walking, bit of trot or canter.
Could you lunge lightly in a pessoa to help keep top line?
vet has basically said he doesnt think horse will come sound (about 1/5th lame on right fore, less on left fore, only really noticeable on a circle on hard ground), farrier is more hoepful (lots of issues going on but not totally diagnosed but likely due to collapsed heels over long period of time). Ostepath said he needs more muscle over back end to help him rebalance but this cant happen until he is sound.... vicious circle.....
he is never going to be anything but a happy hacker / bit of dressage anwway. Am definitely going to give him the winter off anyway (already been off for 4 months) but am trying to think longer term about whether I mask the pain for him and keep his life interesting (he is depressed in field not doing anything) for a short while with the risk he breaks down compeltely or having him bored in field, very slightly lame for many years with not much hope of him ever getting better anyway.
