I was watching a documentry about the ash cloud thing a couple of months ago and they mentioned at the end how the ash was very fertile in small amounts.

This then got me thinking so many cases of atypical myopathy this year compared to any other and whats different this year to every other?

The ash cloud! Could it have encouraged the fungus which they think causes the condition to grow more?

Just a thought really I could be totally wrong but I suppose anything helps :)

Well, I think that is certainly a possibility. That ash cloud caused such chaos, it did leave a its mark on cars, and therefore could have easily affected the ground. Will there ever be any proof though?

Probably no proof, I just so badly want to know what caused it so I'm probably putting too many things together and over-thinking it :p

We unfortunatly lost two to this, the first would have been way back in 1999? and the other in 2007? The ash wasn't 'present' during those times :P But our vet reckons it took the right weather conditions to bring it about. Our field had a old well buried way underneath it and part of the field was always slightly damp so we reckon it may have been this that caused it.

My aunt lost one in wales the year we lost the 2nd horse and it seemed a few got it around that time in the south-west area. Odd thing was only one of three she had turned out in the same field was affected.
But the sounds of it this seems to come in 'bouts'.
