Someone posted yesterday about doing this, and we thought what the hell, nothing to loose! Our water supply at the field is frozen, and we've been bringing water from home twice a day, so we lit a fire with Hotmax and odds and ends of wood with a firelighter, and as is heated filled up the trough with a mixture of the ice already in it, fresh snow and water,. It worked! It took it's time, we tended to it on and off for a couple of hours (whilst we were at the field) when we came back three hours later it was burnt out but completely defrosted!

OH tending to it

It was me that mentioned it. One of the farms i go to for work were doing for the cows out in the fields. Interesting to see it working.

I did think coal next time to keep it in, but the Hotmax catches so well and burns at a high temperature, which was important given how much work it had to do, and we work full time so wouldn't be able to continuously top it up - I think we will be doing it again next weekend, and just breaking the ice through the week.

When I saw the subject line and your user name I thought it was a health and safety game...

"Lighting fires under water troughs, spot the risk"

Was all prepared to write..
* flammable manes
* boiled noses etc, etc!

Tickles *snort* see your point entirely!

M-S - the old boy was happy to drink with the smoke billowing around him, but then we do have bonfires often, the youngster stayed about 10 feet away. I have heard that horses aren't frightened of fire, and our lot certainly don't seem bothered, although a full on fire might be different!
