Lightning - what's safest?

Having just learned that several cows were struck dead by lightning yesterday only a couple of miles from where I was taking part in an endurance ride, I was wondering what's best to do when caught in weather like that. The cows were sheltering under a tree and it's thought the lightning was conducted through a puddle they were standing in.

So ... there you are on your metal-shod horse out in the countryside when a thunderstorm hits you ... what should you do?
 
You should never go under a tree as lightening will go to the highest point. Not really sure with regards to out hacking - get off?
 
Thanks - I missed that thread and you're right - it is an interesting mix of opinions. Still doesn't address the question of what to do if you're away from stables or other form of building shelter ....
 
If your gonna get struck...your gonna get struck... crap happens!!

However.. would highly rec you dismount for a few reasons... the higher you are..the bigger the target!
If your horse is shod... it makes it far more difficult for the bolt (should it strike horse) charge to disperse back to earth.
If the shock didnt get you.. the chances of horse collapsing on you are high!
Lastly.. if your struck.. you stand a better survival chance if your rubber boot soles are in direct contact with the ground.. not metal and charge conducting stirrups.

All in all.... dismount... but stay away from trees, out buildings, and aim to avoid large open spaces.
