Lights on side of lorry.

My lorry got MOT'd today and I found out the answer as to what do lorries need down the side

If your lorry was made after 1st April 1996 you have to have lights and reflectors

If your lorry was made after 1st April 1991 you have to have reflectors

If your lorry was made before this you don't need anything.
 
My lorry failed its MoT last month for the side reflectors sticking out by 5mm as the legal limit is 3mm. The triangular ones on the rear had to be exchanged for square ones.

I had to have lights put on mine last year, it only had reflectors on and had always passed before, it was a j reg Cargo (so about 1992)??
 
Thanks for that DD, I am currently in the process of getting my lorry back on the road and was wondering if I would need them or not. Mine is a G reg which I'm sure is before 1996 so the answer is not

but I think they look nice so may get them at some point in the future if ever I have some spare cash

I don't know why you were told that as ours stuck out a lot more than 5mm and he didn't fail it on that, I even asked if they were stuck out too far and he said no.

The inspectors at this station have a reputation for strictly applying the letter of the rules, and not liking horseboxes.

Ours does have a sticker on the door of a light with 1,3 next to it which gives it some sort of EU concession - I didn't get that bit either, I'll take a photo of the sticker. Maybe that is why ours doesn't need side lights
