I'm thinking about looking for a secondhand lightweight trailer - don't really mind how it looks and I don't need front unload (althoug obviously would prefer it). Just wanting something to run around to local unaffiliated events and the odd trip up the motorway to Bristol to visit some friends.

Got a Toyota Avensis 1.8 petrol - not a towing vehicle but old enough that it doesn't matter too much if I 'hurt' it a bit. Mostly I go to events with my friend and she has a 4x4 but she hates dressage and I would like to do a bit of dressage this season so I would be towing with my Avensis then... in theory.

Ok - now I know that I really ought to have a 4x4 but am I totally crazy thinking I could tow a lightweight trailer with my skinny, leggy 15.2 in it with the Avensis?

And any suggestions as to suitable trailers would be fantastic - obviously as lightweight as possible.

So your kerbside weight is about 1400kg, the max recommended for the car as a towing weight is about 1300kg, although you would be safer aiming for 1200kg - your horse weighs what 450kg? Leaving 750kg for the trailer. The only Ifor you could get away with is the single box, and even then you are at maximum - the Bateson Derby is the better choice - same weight as the Ifor single (or slightly lighter at 695 or so) but the wider wheelbase

thanks - this is the sort of technical knowledge I know I NEED to take into account but don't fully understand yet. Trying to get my head round it but I figured someone here would know instantly

I will have a look at the Batesons.

You'll really struggle with those weights.... If you can't get a 4x4, could you trade your car in for a heavier one? Saab 95 can tow 1800kg, Saab 93 1600kg. At least then you wouldn't be quite so close on the weights and you'd be a lot safer!
