I’ve always ridden with very heavy stirrups , weighted fillis irons to be exact but have noticed a trend for plastic (or other material) light weight irons. I have tried lots of horses over the last couple of months and pretty much every one has had these light stirrups. Tbh I didn’t notice any difference riding in them but what is the technical advantage to them? Is it just a reducing weight thing or is there more to it?

I like them because they tend to be wide with good grip, so suitable for xc. I also like that I'm not going to get smacked in the face with a piece of metal when I'm lugging a saddle about. (I'm clumsy) 🙄

The ones I have flex, so reduced strain on my joints and have cheesegrater treads. I think on really cold days they help to keep you warmer, too. And the fact that they are lightweight is a plus.

I have the Compositi ones, that are like that, very good too!

Yes just got compositi flex & like them. I have sprengers but the biomechanics trainer says they aren’t stable so tried the compositi. As comfortable but the wide foot bed feels more stable especially on the youngster

I like the wide flat grips. I have hypermobile feet and find the normal stirrups quite painful after a while.

Mine are the plastic shires that are wide and gives my knees and ankles better support.

The lightweight 'irons' seem to be shaped better & your feet fit & feel better when riding. The difference in weight means nothing in the whole scheme of things when your horse weighs 500kg+
