am looking at getting my youngster a lightweight turnout, i have a jhl one which is waterproof and very good, but the tail flap curls upwards!! not a major fault by anymeans, but the others i'm considering are saxon 600, masta zing, amigo 600, shires tempest, or possibly the weatherbeeta genero, (out of interest i don't see what the real difference is between the saxon and the genero, both are budget rugs made by the same people with the same denier material!!)

what are peoples experiences of these rugs,

Im doing the same and i think the Masta Zing seems to be my allround fave. It looks longer than the saxon, which seems to only just reach the belly and elbows, and it looks like a much comfyier fit.

It really depends on your youngster, I have just been through this with my yearling, she is long but v narrow still in front and in body in general so normal 6 foot rugs are far too deep in the body, I bought her the Weatherbeeta genero and it went down past her knees!!! LOL! She looked like she was wearing a dress so that went back.

A friend is giving me an Amigo as they are good in the neck and shoulders for narrow babies and I have ordered a Saxon as they are supposed to be good in the neck and like mini skirts in normal horses so should be good on a narrow baby with no width to take up the rug.

Whats your youngster like?? xxxx

saxon 600 - ballerina style but do the job on a budget
masta zing - both of my mastas leaked in their second winters use, my no-fill masta rubbed my tb mare's chest ridiculously (think yellow and pussy after one night, not happy!)
amigo 600 - mines been fab but seen nothing but cr@p reviews on here for them, also friends pony had one and after a few washes (albeit in her machine) it leaked awfully
shires tempest - no experience of no-fill shires rugs but had some old filled ones that were never a problem
weatherbeeta genero - WB usually brill, no experience again with no-fill but have lots of filled wb's and never a problem, if I'm thinking correctly the genero has no shoulder darts? so may rub

I love the Amigos they fit my 11hh Sec A (4'9) and 16.2hh WB (6'3) equally well.

They were only £30 so have bought extras to keep clean just incase it's wet at shows! :)

a 2 year old warmblood, still quite narrow, but done a fair amount of filling out this year so far, so would take normal rugs! i've got him an amigo 1200d 200grm rug (bought it in the sale over winter, intending on it for him this winter, and he ended up fitting it last winter! it was big and came down to his knees, but not too long not to use etc, it should still fit him this winter and he'll fill it more so length isn't an issue really, if it doesn't fit, i've bred an articulated lorry!!! the rug i've got is a 6'9!!! i've just ordered and they've arrived today his stable rugs which are masta and were an absolute bargain!! he used my mares masta stable rug last year and it fit him fine, i've used masta stable rugs for a while and they are a good fit and last, but not had a masta turnout before.

thank you very much for this, very informative, yes genero's have no darts, but then nor do fal's, rambos, amigo's etc, so shouldn't be a problem, the only darted rugs i've got are the jhl and a shires filled rug!

My baby had a Masta Zing Foal rug last year and it was great, had no problems with it.

I think if your baby is in normal rugs the saxon would be really short in the body esp if there is still filling out and growing to do, you'd prob be better off going for one that is deeper.

I have always heard good things about the Amigo's but for the best waterproofness, the 1200 denier is better but personally if your baby isnt in the habit of destroying rugs and still growing I'd go fot the cheaper 600d and get some waterproof spray to give it an extra coat, thats worked a treat on Marthas other t.o from last year after washing it.

Weatherbeetas are good apparently -not used one before but it was quite generous in the neck.

Very good point! And my amigo hasn't ever rubbed my tb mare that it was bought for and the section D I have now, darts obviously aren't all they're cracked up to be!

I have the tempest shire, no probs at all, keeps the rain off and is a good quality. Tend to come up big though

Masta ones are robust but come up quite heavy esp when wet and have rubbed somewhere on every horse I have seen one on. My horse has one for emergencies (consecutive wet days) but his everyday l/w is the Red Shires one... 35 squirrels=bargain and very light weight and allows him to fart about in the field!

The GFS l/w is also good but on a budget I would buy Shires everytime!

Amigo have the shaped cutout bit (technical term!) behind the front leg which mean they don't pull and rub as the horse walks etc

I really rate mine- Sec A had his on all winter rain, sleet, snow and it was perfect no leaks or rubs. Will now be investing in the filled range for the winter.

Masta Zing = RUBBISH it leaked in light showers

*LW Amigo 600d. Good cheap rug, showerproof. Brilliant for my growing youngster. The 1200d version is waterproof.

*LW Rhino. Wonderful rug. Good fit on my narrow horses. Has stayed fully waterproof year after year.

*Premier Equine Buster Lite. Leaked from the start, not even showerproof.

*Bucas Sunshower. Leaked from the start, not even showerproof.

*Bucas Smartex Rain. A slightly warmer LW rug due to the stay dry lining. Brilliant fit on LW horses, tough outer (still looks fab) and is storm/heavy rain proof even after a few years. Can be put on a damp horse as this rug is properly breathable. Expensive but worth it.

weatherbeetas all the way for my warmblood - they fit her perfectly whereas i find some of the other makes are too narrow / just not cut right for her build
