now that summer is here, ha ha just wondering which is the most waterproof lightweight turnout that isnt expensive either

Amigos. Apart from they have some truely awful colours, they're cheap but very, very waterproof. Even after night of torrential rain, pony is still dry. Under £40 I think. I've had mine a few years now and had it washed this year, most people thought I'd bought a new one as it came up so well (thanks to Izzwizz;))

yeah i thought they were but finley is still wet especially when its like this it hasnt been used that much so shoudnt need reproofing yet?

I have got a weatherbeta and Meg was wet around her neck, but dry over her back when I went up tonight. I got it last year and dont think it was very expensive - it has been better than I expected when I bought it.

Going by my rug destroying mare she has managed to go through three Mastas and is on the third year of her Saxon (in 7 years) think it was about 35 quid. I am waterproofing it this year.

iv got a weatherbeeta thats about 3 summers old, not been re-proofed and is fine. a mark todd on its second summer and again fine and a rambo thats done about 8 years with no re-proofing and is still 100% waterproof!!! you get what you pay for iMHO.

I like the 1200D Amigo Lites (they only come in navy). There has been a lot of discussion in the past as to whether the cheaper, coloured, 600D Amigo's are waterproof in heavy rain.

Agree 600d Amigos are no good in heavy rain.

I have a 15 year old Rambo light (with blue mesh lining) which is still going strong and has never been reproofed.

Have also had success with Weatherbeeta Landa lite.

Despite DH being awful with their delivery I am impressed with their LW turnout, it fits wells and is of nice quality for little ££.
However delivery is a major issue with derby house, if their delivery was better I would be buying a hell of a lot more from them.

I am premier equine fanatic. I recently got a lightweight turnout from their sales page - so pretty reasonably priced - and it's just brilliant. Worth a look on their website if you're shopping!

I have a castle lightweight rug and would definitely recommend it. Harry has always been dry underneath it whatever the rain type. Also, really sturdy stuff. Harry's masta rug was getting ripped all the time but the rug rippers in his field but that hasn't happened once with his castle rug, very impressed. Cost £30

Amigo all the way - I have the 600D one and it's been absolutely fine. Weatherbeeta rugs i cannot stand to be hollnest, they just don't seem to fit well. I did have a masta rain sheet and that slipped back and rubbed so I'll steer clear from them too.

Alot depends on your horse shape though. I haven't noticed my Amigo leak in heavry rain. However, i only used it when my horse was clipped out and it rained at the end of the winter when it was too warm for his normal rug. Will maybe use it again when I clip himi in the summer.

However, I wouldn't actually bother with a rug in the summer rain. Horse after all can survive a bit of rain! :-)

Thankyou G, I say taking a bow! The Amigo 600d are pretty good in my experience but I have heard of some people having a problem now and again with them. Mine (and its a red one) has done 2 Summers now and hasnt leaked and its been washed and re-proofed - thanks to Nikwax, fab stuff! The 1200d ones are obviously made of a more robust fabric hence the price being slightly more. Personally I think if you got 2 Summers out of one of the 600d rugs its value for money. Mine was £29.95 when I bought it and they have gone up £5 now. Tonights rain will be a test for many a rug!! Will be interested to see if horse I look after, who has a red Amigo on tonight, is dry tomorrow.

I bought a Shires Tempest for £29.99 while my Amigo 1200D was being repaired and am very impressed. I didn't expect it to be totally waterproof for long but it has been fantastic. My Amigo 600D is not waterproof at all, I use it as a stable sheet now!

I've got a bright red 600D lite, never a soggy back in sight! (and you can always spot Dragon a mile off-ha ha ha)

another vote for the derby house lightweight (though none of the awful slogan type ones they now have - just bog standard greyish one), fits my sturdy mare really well and has always been waterproof despite being well put through its paces by my bog monster! Wouldn't buy the attachable neck though, the oddest shape I have ever seen for a neck! No use at all really as it is such an odd shape! If you like them though it is worth getting the emails and getting it on special offer - they so often have special offers on postage or reductions on the rug. http://www.derbyhouse.co.uk/prodshow.asp?id=6274&a=srch

Shires summer stormbreaker has been fab - been used, cleaned and re-proofed for 2 seasons and still in good condition. Amazing really since my mare lives to roll!!
