I have a laminitic on box rest. Am following vets advice re very restricted diet. Felt sorry for the poor boy, so OH installed a boredom breaker, and I put 2 little likits in. Then I thought err should I be doing this, due to the sugar content in them-if any?

Anyway, this morning found that cherry likit has been demolished, but garlic likit still intact

Does anyone know if there are any restrictions using these for lammis?

I have a laminitic and there is no way she will ever have a likit - but then she didn't before her laminitis either . They are full of sugar so are best avoided - mine has a salt lick and that is it. Its cruel to be kind with lamintics I'm afraid.

To give them something different to nibble on cut down nettles and leave them to wilt and then feed - very good for laminitics or fresh parsley or mint in their feed.

please tell me this is a wind up.

If not then please remove the remaining Likit and have a look at the Laminitis trust website.

sorry if this sounds harsh, but likits are basically sugar.

Not all are full of sugar. Try Rockies, they are the old style not like the Horselix and Likits, but they are still boredom breakers. My mare is on a diet and she can have the rockie because it is all mineral no added sugar.

My horse is on box rest at mo for the same reason. Personally I wouldnt feed one, there must be something sweet about them to be attractive to the horses. I give mine a turnip/swede in a bucket to play with. Shes a greedy monster and doesnt particuarly like them but when push comes to shove she will nibble at it when theres nothing else going. You could put a hole thro one and tie it up as a plaything. The Laminitis Clinic have a telephone helpline you could ring and check if lickits are ok though.

Righty ho. Likit will come down straight away, I guessed as much, about the sugar content, should know better!!!

Yes I have a Rockie for him too, but he doesnt seem to like it!!

I have also threaded carrots onto the boredom breaker, as vet said he could have lots of succulents to play around with.

I would be carefull giving carrots, they are also full of sugar

was told last week not to feed the paddock likits as they contained too much sugar and also not to give carrots as they are full of sugar (??!!!!!)

instead we've been giving him a swede every day to roll around, munch and play with and he adores them!!! great fun toy, cheap and lasts for whole day even with my starving monster!

Gosh there is a lot of conflicting advice around. My vet said feed him carrots and parsnips and swedes etc. to keep him occupied????

I guess I will just stick to giving him his ration of soaked hay and Happy Hoof on its own.

likits are full of sugar and so are carrots if it was my horse it would have hardly anything and just the basic stuff it needed sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. Good luck with him
