Likits - surely they are bad for horses...?

My mare has just polished off a whole one in 5 days (which is a lot better than the last one which she promptly just ate in one go). Do you use them? Is your horse capable of a healthy relationship with the Likit...? How much is too much?

Surely they can't be good for horses, they are just sugar!?

Your mare took 5 whole days????? Ellie devours one in five minutes!!!

I think they're billed as the equine version of Lucozade, but tbh I have never noticed any ill effects so I am happy to feed them - I do think they can be a life saver with a horse who is kept in a lot of the time! Ellie has one a week - I wouldnt give her more than that - and I have hers in the Boredom Breaker so she has to work for it

Mine pretty much hovers them in one go.

BUT she gets them once in a blue moon i.e 4/5 a year if that (in fact think last one was last January).

I think if you were replacing it constantly then yes it would be bad. But becareful and sensible IMHO it isn't going to hurt.

yeh i use a boredome breaker from the roof. the mare loves it (but does appear to get hyper even at looking at one!, but doesnt appear to get any ill effects from it). have to agree with mizelz, i only give them as a treat as i think she would go through a whole one each evening if given the choice!

i also believe its been good for her as a youngster as it flaps around her face/back/rump and she was unfazed with backing etc etc!

That's the thing - they either seem to eat them in one go, or not like them at all. Such irresponsible creatures, surely they are meant to just have a little lick every now and again so they last for ages - just like I would if someone gave me a huge box of chocolate...

NOT!!!

mine demolish them in about 5 mins. i think of it as being like the biggest polo mint they'll ever get.
btw, is there a magic way of getting the ********* plastic casing off? i have 1 or 2 lying around and don't want to risk stabbing my fingers again when i try to cut the flipping casings off.

Kerilli I don't think there is: you'd have thought they'd have changed the packaging by now, wouldn't you?!

I remember a thread a little while ago where the conclusion was nobody can unwrap likkit well, with the exception of our horsey friends: Frankie managed to break into and devour one while I was rummaging for some scissors to undo it

Oh - so THATS how you make them last! Give them to the HORSE to unwrap! xP Never thought of that one...
Though think my pony would just eat it all... especially if it was a banana one...

Said pony used to get about 1 a week when he was actually in work (so stabled at night) and it never did him any harm xD Even hung from the roof, he can kill one in about 30seconds... hmm

hehe!!! my mare is the best with these she LOVES them!! I hang them from the roof so she cant get them on a wall and she has learnt to balance them on her lips and cracks them clean in half and eats them half at a time! by the time u have walked out the stable from putting it up and shut the door ...its gone!!!!!!!

Mine's lasted longer as i'm a bit tight and didnt want to fork out for a holder so i just loop strong bailer band through it and hang it round a bar in his stable, it moves around a bit so he cant get at it straight away!

Not sure how good/bad they are sugar wise though!

Captain had one of the hanging one, which he promptly cornered and ate in about 10 minutes! He can also get the likit out of the boredom breaker ball thing that you attach to a wall and the restricter off a molasses lick. Needless to say he doesn't get left with them!

I think there probaly healther now than when they first came out and were just a big block of molasses.
My horse always liked those ones better and when they came out in the little tubs she had a intresting way of eating them.
She would make a grove in it with her top teeth, lick it a bit and then almost spit in it. She would then drink/slurp the goo.

everyone thought she clever, i thought she was odd.

The mess she made when she lifted her head up and it would just dribble everywhere. She only ever got one every now and again so i was never worried, she enjoyed herself and thats all that mattered.

ahh but which is the most popular flavour?

A girl I went to Uni with did her dissertation on that!

I have no idea what the conclusion was though!

The novelty wears off them once Hen has had one, if I replaced it straight away he would just ignore it.

Took Dylan ages to figure out how to work them, he's got a boredom breaker hanging from the ceiling. Now if you put one up, it'll be in pieces all over the box five minutes later, and he'll spend ages rooting about his bed to find all the bits he's dropped!

My horse needs a 6 1/2" bit so he puts his jaws around it and breaks it, it is gone in a minute.

He doesnt get one often, I cant remember the last time he did. I kept on hitting my head on it.

I gave one to my horse a few years ago, she ate half of it overnight and then got colic. So a £2.99 Likit cost me a 100 quid for a sunday emergency callout.

I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole now.

I had a horse who absolutely loved the cherry one but wouldn't touch any others! He didn't get them very often though as it was hung in a boredom breaker thing and it's such an unnatural way for them to spend a long time stretching/standing it used to mess up his back..

I gave mine an apple one when she was on box rest last year and she managed to break the holder, demolish the likit and leave it in pieces on the floor of her stable. She hadnt ate much of it so i've never given her another one. I prefer the natural mineral licks.
