Please can someone confirm if Limestone needs to be fed alongside Mag Ox - I don't know the ins and outs, but my friend said her vet recommended this in order for the Mag Ox to work?

I've heard this to, but does anyone know the reasons why, also will mag ox used on it's own be beneficial for a horse that is deficient in it? Our soil has been tested and is low.

Soil low in Magnesium is common in the UK, however the subject of minerals is complex as there are some which are not available easily to the horse, so a good mineral mix will use a balanced mix and will select ingredients on bio-availailability as well as the actual mineral analysis.
Straight MgO is probably the cheapest way of providing Mg, but there are other ways which are kinder/more palatable. Personally I prefer to feed straights and use a balanced mineral mix, with added MgO to provide 10gms per day for a 15.00 barefooter.
But I usually start off a new horse with a broad spectrum mineral and a magnesium calmer, until I know the temperament etc. You need to introduce minerals over a week or so, and provide a carrier feed.
Don't forget 25gms of salt [NaCl] per day.
Limestone is CaCarbonate, if you are on limestone soil you won't need to add any, to be frank, it is fairly inert, and you are probably best to provide a balance quality mineral mix rather than adding a bit of this and a bit of that...........
If you want to go in to detail there are companies which analyse the forage and tell you what you need in a bespoke mineral mix. eg Forageplus.
The soil analysis is not the same as the forage analysis as the uptake and availability of the minerals is different.
