Well, I am in the process of buying a little project pony - I think I have found one but can't help still looking, just to make sure i've found the right one!!
Anyway, just looking through some ads and one says Line Bred to ........... (insert name of quite prolific stallion within the breed). I remember a while ago some of us had a little discussion on this but I have forgotten what it is........... so what is line breeding???

If you look in his pedigree you will find the same stallion appearing more than once on his dam side and sire side - very common in welshies and sometimes riding ponies. Whenit goes right it'sline breeding when it goes wrong it's in-breeding!!

Thanks, both of you - I thought it was something like that but couldn't remember. The horse looks stunning but I wouldn't want a horse that had been line bred!!!

If the pony is fine in every other way I wouldn't let it put you off - my old 14.2 pony was line bred to Bwlch Valentino and she was lovely - bit scatty but that was attributed to her being by Twylands Troubadour!, I had her for 12 years before losing her to colic and she bred a stunning filly. I also currently have a 3year old section C/D line bred to Nebo Daniel who is a super little thing.

Donkey is line-bred, or is it in-bred?!?!?

It's what has ruined almost every pedigree dog breed on the grounds that when you try to select for all the visible characteristics, you get all the invisible ones multiplied up.

The only time it works is in a closed community with VERY harsh selection criteria - as per the Icelandic horse where the population hasn't altered since Viking times, but then again, if they were weak, they didn't survive the winter, so natural selection played a big role.

ON the whole, it's a seriously bad idea and best avoided, tho' everyone will find at least one exception that proves the rule. (and all TBs are technically line bred back to the three foundation stallions. Fortunately there are enough mares to dilute them down and it was a LONG time ago)

Cleveland Bays have a lot of line breeding just due to scarcity - the Society are trying hard now to eliminate it occurring in the future

I think where Welshes are concerned, pretty much all are line-bred so I wouldn't let that put me off buying this pony.
