I am interested in a horse but its says its has been line fired succesfully in 2008, its from a reputable yard, but should i steer clear of a line fired horse? HELP
My first reaction is not to touch with a bargepole but it kinda depends what you want, how much it is, how good it is, how much work it has done etc. Basically, if you don't mind a horse that has previously had a tendon prob then it might not be that much of an issue....
Depends what you want to do with the horse and what level of work the horse has managed since the injury. Ask the seller to speak to their vet to see how bad the injury was and the prognosis. Although personally i think firing is a load of c*** and one of the worst treaments possible for tendon injuries, there are much better, less painful treatments available
Many horses are still fired before they actually sustain an injury.. i do not approve by the way, and i understand it is not legal in England... but it is still done just a boat crossing away.
My TB was bar fired. Not sure when but I got him as 6 year old and he is now 8. No problems whatsoever with his FRONT legs (just hind with spavins!!). He's hunted through all country even very deep clay and legs absolutely fine. I have no idea which was the original leg, if indeed there was an original leg or whether he just got fired.
Don't be mega hasty to write a horse off if its been fired. You could have no problems whatsoever!!
My TB has had this done. When I checked with his previous trainer they informed me that he had been fired although he had not had an injury - it is thought to strengthen the tendons. He's never had a problem. I certainly don't agree with the practice but it wouldn't put me off looking at a horse - but I would be getting a full vetting done and asking plently of questions as to the reason for him being fired.
