Linseed - cooked vs micronised, any difference?

As above.

I've been feeding Charnwood's micronised linseed to the neds for years. This time, my usual supplier (Farm and Pet Place) has supplied 'cooked linseed meal' instead. Is this a direct equivalent, or should I be concerned? I have only opened the bag tonight, and would normally feed it tomorrow morning.

TIA

It is different, charnwoods use infra red which, marriages cook it, the resulting nutritional analyses are different.

If more people are stocking marriages this may need some more investigation in future!

Tx, Ester.

Oh, bum. F&PP had described it as 'micronised linseed' on their website, so I assumed it was Charnwoods linseed but in a plain bag. I've just ordered some proper Charnwood's direct.

Hmm, should I bin the Marriages cooked linseed or risk feeding it in the interim? I'll be phoning F&PP in the morning to register my concerns...

Plenty seem to feed it without issue, some people say it doesn't last as long. I'd feed it if I had it.

My investigation of it came from discovering that Mum could buy marriages locally, so I asked on Lucy priory's barefoot fb group and between her talking to charnwoods and me emailing marriages and looking at the specs (the omega3:6 is different, and the protein iirc I'd have to check). The term micronising can mean a few different things to different people which doesn't help.

The picture on their site does show that now but I would certainly raise it with them.

Thanks, both. That's a big difference in starch levels, isn't it.

FPP say that no other customers have reported issues with the change in suppliers, and tbf it's my own fault for not checking before I placed the order. However, the drama diva Cushing's mare has made her feelings clear and refused to touch her feed this morning with the Marriages linseed in. It doesn't smell as nice.

Should get the Charnwood's delivered tomorrow, with any luck.

If you want to go back to FPP then found the following. specs

Charnwood

Protein 23.00%,
oil 35.00% (omega 3: 18.2% omega 6: 5.3% omega 9: 7.7% others 3.5%),
fibre 7.00%,
ash 5.15%, lysine 0.93%,
methionine 0.46%,
M + C 0.81%,
DE (horses) 20.50 mj/kg as fed,
calcium 0.23%,

Marriages

Omega 3: 21%
Crude Protein: 21.8%
Oil: 37.30%
Crude Fibre: 17.6%
Sugar: 1.99%
Starch: 10.9%

So big difference in starch. In terms of omega oils, it is the ratio of 3, 6 9 that is key and Marriages doesn't give that and we therefore don't know the total oil content. Marriages is higher in fibre but that's not what I feed linseed for.

I sell this where I work, the company that makes it has a micronisation plant. Whether its the exact same process that Charnwoods use I don't know but it is micronised

see this is where the term 'micronisation plant' just causes confusion.

They do not have this

they just cook it (at 110C) and make mill it to make it small, then cool for four hours. For a lot of techy people that would not be micronising compared to the process I link above.

Thanks for bringing this up TP, Mum usually orders from Farm and pet place so I will check when she last ordered!

I have asked when FPP made the change as I am worried that we may have had some too (200 miles away I dont get to see the bags!)

as I say and in the links above, it is the term 'micronised' being used so loosely that is the issue.

It can just mean making things small

from a charwoods point of view it 'micronizing' means the whole process of infra red and making things small.

The Pure Feed Co also say their linseed is micronised but I can't find any nutritional info for it - does anyone know the starch and sugar values for it? It's impossible to get Charnwood down here so I hoping to use Pure Feeds instead.

I once had a bag of the marriages linseed and I did not think it was as good quality as the Charnwood stuff, and didn't smell as nice. I usually order from F&PP but didn't last time as they were in the middle of changing supplier - won't be ordering from them in future then! That's a big difference in starch levels.

Where do you live? I get my charnwoods linseed online delivered for about £25 a 20kg sack, works out cheaper than Pure Feeds unless you buy in bulk from them.

I'm in Swansea and can get Pure Feeds linseed for £20 a bag from a local supplier. Good news that it's re-packaged Charnwoods.

Thanks for the recommendation, but is that the new name for GW Titmuss? The reviews suggest that it is. I've ordered from GW Titmuss before when F&PP were out of stock, and sadly their delivery was very slow and the comms were worse.

Yes it is. That's a shame as I have regularly ordered from GJW Titmuss over the past few years and never had an issue with them. I guess it depends how much you go through as to whether you try them again and hope your previous experience was a one off.

ETA sorry, cross posted with Ester. x

I just buy fresh seeds and micronise them myself just before feeding in my coffee grinder. Much cheaper than any ready done stuff, beautifully fresh and perfectly safe, contrary to popular belief. Any cyanide produced is negligible and I believe it has been tested fed this way at up to 500g a day without issue.

Really? You infra red treat your home milled linseed?

Drama diva mare is back eating again :). The micronised as per my expectations linseed arrived direct from Charnwoods this morning. She had previously refused again to touch the Marriages linseed, but hoovered up her tea tonight with the proper stuff in.

The Marriages linseed smelt like stale digestive biscuits, though according to the label it was 'use by 18/02/18'. I have disposed of it on the muck heap.

Always good service from Charnwoods, but bizarrely they are more expensive than other suppliers.

Thanks for the heads up anyway, home now and confirmed our last delivery was charnwoods. I wouldn't have known about the change had you not said and Mum wouldn't have realised so much appreciated! (and F is a dreadfully fussy ******!)

FPP didn't say when they changed but 'have passed my comments on to the equine team' as I said it wasn't equivalent and I would no longer be purchasing from them. Is it cheaper than what they were selling charnwoods for? It should be!

Actually you feed it raw and whole in the US http://www.thehorse.com/articles/10915/non-toxic-linseed
