What's the easiest way to feed linseed to my herd?

I have one of those NAF (?) square bottles of the stuff, but only about 3% of the oil goes in the feed, about 34% dribbles down the bottle, about 33% goes all over my hands, and the remainder ends up on the feedroom floor.

Please help.

It is designed to be ready to feed - the micronisation process having a similar effect to the old-fashioned, messing boiling stuff we used to do!

Speak for yourself - I don't even cook for me, never mind them...and the smell of burnt barley is foul...

So how much of the micronised stuff should I shovel down each horse each day?

as much as you like really - I go for a mug full in each feed for every horse. Can't bear boiling the whole linseed and never find the oil any good. Much prefer the micronised stuff and it is fantastic. Mine is from Charnwood

I make my own too, get it from the feed merchants, pour boiling water on it, give it a zap in the microwave then put it in the slow cooker for 4 hours. Horse mugs me for it.

Yeah I get it from feed merchants but please beware anyone reading this do not feed the seeds without cooking as they can be poisonous.
Only need a handfull of seeds and you get loads of oil from it. I pour in to old milk containers to store and easy to pour out (Put some cold cold water in container first as it will melt the plastic).
It is quite potent so dont need to feed alot only a slosh from the container is enough 3 times a week

I havent fed it myself but my saddle lady highly recomends it, I think she said you need to by it neet so not a brand like NAF etc and soak it in hot water overnight, google it but she said none of the others that are already made are no where near as good x

Thicko question - Be ready.

What do you feed it for? Is it good for weight or condition etc???

What is the stuff called that you soak yourself? (ie what do i goole)

Linseed is a good source of oil, so gives a good shine on the coat, and if fed in sufficient quantities can promote weight gain as well because it is a dense form of calories.

Thanks, has it been know to fizz them up?

It shouldn't fizz them up, because it is low in starch and sugar, with the calories mainly coming from the oil content.

Thank you...

I would question that particular pearl of wisdom myself...micronized linseed is simply precooked linseed, which renders it safe to feed. Linseed in it's raw form is toxic unless prepared properly.

Linseed Lozenges from any decent agri merchants. I pay £13 for a 20k sack. No soaking, no cooking and no mess!

In the cow food section and made by I'anson (or possibly L'Anson?) - I know quite a few heavy horse people who use this as buying something like Simple Systems when you are feeding a herd is beyond expensive!

Hi I use a similar thing called xlint which I think is a great source of energy and coat conditioner. Not sure of the web sitename but if you google xlint it will come up. It comes ina big tub ready to feed a cup is all you need

Not sure whether they are the same - but I'm with Spaniel. Mine have a handful of the lozenges in feed twice a day, and Barry's coat is like a mirror!! Very cost effective - and I never managed to boil linseed without burning the wretched stuff!

I buy micronised linseed from charnwood milling - good valur for money. Small cup for coat bloom, large cup for weight gain. All the show horses get it and anything that needs to put a bit of condition on

Yes, exactly - nothing like it for coats. A good coat comes from the Inside not from what is put on the Outside.
However, if you wish to cook "neat" linseed - as we had to do in the old days, then half-fill a solid bottomed big jam saucepan, fill to top with water and stick on the back of the Aga overnight or on a Low Hob for about 5 hours. Make sure that it has soaked up most of the water and turned itself into a glutinous mess before feeding.

I'd go for the Charnwood stuff too, works out at least half the price of the SS stuff. I'm not sure where I read this but I think the micronised stuff is supposed to be better than the lozenges, can't remember why - might be some extra added 'stuff' in the lozenges..

If you want to feed oil then get a pump dispenser to fit the 5L bottle - only a couple of quid from the feed shop - makes sure the same amount of oil is dispensed each time and that it goes in the feed dish!
