Does it fizz them up, anyone know?
I have to be very careful with my tall, slim, high energy TB and need to get weight on her.

I don't find it does, and I feed it in fairly high amounts to my nutty WBxTB. If I feed molassed sugar beet, however... she's dynamite. I've been pleased with the results of using full fat linseed meal. I've been using it for 2 years now with excellent results and temperament.

Thankyou Spyda, where do you buy it, how much is it, and how much do you need to give?

You can purchase linseed meal, plus a few other useful things, from here Gravenhorse feeds. Specifically the meal here - Linseed meal, 25kg. Price ranges from £24 to £34 incl delivery, depending on your location.

That said, your local horse feed supplier may be able to order it in for you on 'special order' which would save you the delivery charge. I know Bone's will supply it, so if your feed merchant uses them, they can order it in for you from there. Just make sure you specify FULL FAT LINSEED MEAL else they will end up selling you the more commonly available linseed lozenges.

Amounts to feed depend on what you want to use it for. Less for coat shine, more for conditioning.

I'd suggest starting off with a small amount (as it does have a distinctive taste and texture which might need getting used to). Say, 1/4 mug mixed throughly into each feed, morning and evening. Once your horse is used to it you can increase the amount slowly. I feed 500g per day in deep winter, which is quite a lot. Many people find 100 - 200g per day gives a fine shine to the coat and is all they need to help with conditon and moulting.

Apparently you can feed up to 1kg per day, but you would need to monitor and adjust the rest of your horse's ration at these levels, to avoid excessive protein consumption. If you need any help, if you phone them at Gravenhorse they are really helpful!

The other thing you could try with or instead of is brewers yeast. Its good to put condition on and acts as a calmer, stress reliver.
