Ok, I posted this in Stable Yard but haven't had any responses and not too many views either, so I thought I'd ask in here too, given that there's much more traffic in here, so you see there is good reason for my double posting, I'm not just an attention whore

C&P'd from SY:

Hi everyone.

The vet's recommended a cp of linseed oil per day for Boo so can anyone tell me the cheapest place to purchase linseed oil please?

Many thanks

ps, is linseed oil and flaxseed oil the same thing?

Anyone??

Buy some raw linseed, health food or feed merchants now sell in small packets. Soak for 24 hours in cold water.
Cook by boiling vigerously for seven minutes or so then simmer for a couple of hours until the seeds have split and you have a nice gooey mess.
You can also get ready to feed linseed , however I suspect you need the oil.

Yes, basically she had a nasty bout of impaction colic a couple of weeks ago and I mentioned to my YO that her poops were a bit hard. The vet was down at the yard so she asked him what would be best and he said a cup of linseed oil per day.

See? I should have explained myself better in the first post, I automatically assume everyone knows everything lol

Thanks for your replies guys.

Moving on: If I go down boiling my own, I need about half a cup to make the equivalent of a cups worth of oil? Yes?

And I soak overnight, then bring to the boil, boil it for a few minutes then simmer it for a few hours 'til it forms a jelly? Then what? Tip the whole lot into the feed?

Could I not just soak it all day then put it in the slow cooker overnight (switched on of course!) to feed the following morning?

How long could I expect, say, 5kgs to last?

Hello,

I feed ready to eat micronised linseed -- I understand that
even ready to feed has a very mild laxative effect. I buy
up to 10kg from either MetabolicHorse or from
Hilton Herbs.
