Hi there,

As of Saturday I will be loaning a 15.3-16hh warmblood. I was told he has linseed oil in his dinner but not sure how much. How much do you suggest putting in? He is under weight but not massively and is unfit.

also how many of you boil it yourself or buy the micronised version?

thanks for your help!

I use the micronised type my 15h Arab gets between 200 and 300gm per day depending on how his weight is, can you not ask previous owner what he was having? Failing that start on about 50g a day to start with and up it slowly over about a week, and if he still looks like he needs weight on give him some more, what else will you feed him?

Hi

Thank you, his previous owner never fed him it it's a new thing she suggested to me. Should I buy a plastic measuring jug for it as well?
He also has in his feed, scoop of chaff, scoop of calm and conditioner by Allen's & page

Thank you again for your help! Much appreciated

Charnwood Mills is the best value for micronised linseed that I know of - quite right the still expensive oil is not proven that good for horses.

Hi, sorry to be a pain.

So is the micronised linseed actually a meal not an oil?
Just want to make sure I buy the right one! I bet I sound like a complete idiot! Never used linseed before

Linseed is a small brown seed of the flax plant, it can be boiled, and ends up making an awful mess of your stove, and they won't all eat it like that!
The micronised product is lightly cooked and rolled, so it is ready to eat, and will store easily [rodent proof bin] Start off with 50gms and build up to 100 gms [coffee mug size] over a week, keep on that for a few weeks and add more if needed, 200gms is plenty for most horses.
Micronised linseed meal is less processed than oil, and has fibre and other nutrients which would be lost in industrial oil extraction.
It is £30 delivered from Charnwood Milling for 20kgs, cheaper in some horse feed stores [but not in Tesco's]

Feed Mark sell micronised linseed in 4kg tubs with little scoop provided, I give my 16'2 Warmblood one 50g scoop twice a day in his feeds.

When feeding oil or the linseed meal beware that at certain higher quantities you will need to supplement with Vitamin E. I would ask a nutritionist as to how much you can safely feed if it is a higher quantity you want. I use the Charnwood micronized linseed for my 16hh TB and feed 200g a day on top of her normal diet. I contacted them to ask about the highest quantity I could feed without further supplementing my horse and 200g is what they recommended for my mare (this will vary horse by horse and also depends on what they are fed otherwise).
Baileys Outshine is a high oil supplement that is practically made from linseed and soya oils and has the relevant vit/min spectrum added so quite safe to add in any quantity but it is also quite pricey.

Oil also affects the calcium:phosphorus ratio so you may need to supplement calcium unless feeding linseed that has already been balanced correctly and UKa is correct Vit E should be added if feeding a high oil diet. You can buy linseed that is correctly balanced.
