Linseed - Weight gain

I start at fifty grammes once a day for two days then up too 100 grammes and so on .
Its very high in oil and protein so it can give horses the runs and needs to be approached with care if the horse has ever had azoturia however I feed it with great sucess to our 'azoturia' horse.
It's a great food for horses .

I was feeding my 3 yr old a mug a day.
Last year I couldn't keep weight on him, this year I have had to stop feeding (other than the token chaff to feed the pro hoof in) as he is getting porky!

Thanks I will do that. :)

I expect you're not getting any solid answers as there's no real data on safe levels ;). I've heard that you can feed up to 100g per 100kg of bodyweight, so for a 490kg horse about 500g would be the upper limit. I would not feed more than this, but currently feed at that rate for my TB, with no apparant ill effects.

Okay thanks for that, so I guess its safe to feed 500g?

Okay, I have just bought myself some linseed. I have obviously bought it for weight gain so want to feed 500g per day. How much should I start him on and how quickly build it up or can I just give him 500g straight off?

Had mine on Linseed this winter, built it up to 2 mugfulls a day split over 2 feeds but she was losing too much weight when usually she is fine - she didn't like eating it though so I think the weight loss was more abouot her leaving most of her tea! Had to go back to Baileys No4 cubes but still adding a half mug of linseed per feed and she's really picked up quick on this

Aim to feed up 200g a day but oyu need to introduce it slowly over a two to three week period.

Maintain at 200g a day until you reach the desired effect.

Bit off track but where's best place to buy from, I've heard of Charnwood milling but can't seem to find an option to buy online? Should normal feed merchants stock too?

How much did everyone start on though, does everyone just go by mugs and not weigh?

Golden star already replied to me about this on page one of the thread!

I use a measuring cup and measure it in grams. Without actually measuring it but comparing in my head to my measuring cup, a mug would be approaching 500 grams.

I use a 50ml scoop from a suppliment and started by putting one of those in each feed to introduce it and then increased it by 50ml a time.

I am currently feeding 300ml a day total, and will increase that when I need more condition.

I read that 500g should be a maximum too.

If you work on a mugful being less than half a pint then I'm feeding a bit more than one mug a day.
