i posted this in New Lounge aswell, so apologies if youve already read it!

what is linseed fed for?
how is it prepared?
and do you have to feed with a bulk? ie chaff, hi-fi
or can it be fed on its own?

Linseed is wonderful at putting a real shine on a horses coat.

You can buy it pre-prepared in a few forms, powder, cake, oil, and should be fed in recommended amounts in the feed.
 
I used the micronised form - I have little enough time as it is so no boiling the stuff for me.

Chancer gets it for show condition and coat - he gets a coffee mug twice a day. I sometimes go up to 3 mugs a day. In winter he is on a mug a day.

Farra and before her, Cairo (our clydesdales) have it, again for skin/coat health and it is also very good for digestion and joints - very effective on old horses stiffness. Being big horss they got a mug twice a day, but if I want real show condition/gloss, would go up to 4 mugs a day.

I just put it in their feeds - they have SS fibre diets and linseed is very complimentary to it.

I get mine, along with my brewers yeast from http://www.charnwood-milling.co.uk as it is far cheaper than SS.
 
"In the old days" you used to buy linseed and have to cook it for ages until it was a jelly. It has to be cooked as it is poisonous if raw. It boiled over very easily making a terrible mess of the cooker. It often fed as a nice easily digested mash for a horse after hunting. It is also well known as a coat conditioner (all those Omega 3 oils).

Now it is mostly sold as pre-cooked in one form or another, see above.
 
LOL, how well I remember the volcanic erruptions of snot cascading down the cooker! I feed NAF Linseed Oil now, they only need a small amount and their coats are really shiney. My friends arthritic cob is much more sprightly too since hes gone on to it.
 
I feed linseed flakes by adding a small handfull into the feeds of all my mine all year round. It adds shine, maintains condition and helps the coats stay glossy.
 
My feed merchant makes up small bags that cost me £2 and last me about a month ( I have 6 to feed). I know you can buy large sacks and think they are around £10. I have seen it in a tub similar to those for supplements too, but can't remember the make.
The flakes I use look like little chunks of chocolate.
