Practiced taking the horse and the mini Shetland out today. A lowered breast bar and cross ties seem to work to keep the little one in place.

Now need to buy new hay nets as found a birds nest (with fledglings!) in my existing ones. Hopefully the birds will only need to be left in peace for a few weeks.

Oh dear, need a new plan, shared on Shetland forum and they said pony might hit his face in an accident. Any suggestions? They’re both coming on holiday so need to travel together for a few hours.

In an accident horses will get hurt wherever bar is. I travelled my standard shetland in a single trailer no problems and I didn't even have a nicely lowered bar like you As long as little chap can reach his haynet safely looks an ideal set up

Could you travel the shetland facing backwards, and block up the area under the front breast bar with straw bales to provide support for his rear end?

I would turn the Shetland round, but I'd also make the partition solid to the floor if travelling with another horse, because at the moment it looks like his body could go underneath?

Can you get a breast bar made for the Shetland that's longer and which can be fitted diagnally, so the end that is attached to the outer wall is about a foot lower than the other end?
Probably wouldn't work as would need hinges then but just a thought

Thanks everyone. I need to sort this quickly (and then can look into some custom options longer-term). Really like the ideas.

On Shetland site they say just cross tie and no bar.

Take the photos to a local engineering company they will draw you some alternative systems and quote you a price then drop the trailer at their yard for a couple of days

I wouldn't go no bar. Even if you put the bar on its highest so it's over his head. You need both bars done up on either side to keep the partitions secure. I speak from experience.

Thanks. I can put it above his head in the case. I did think might compromise the rigidity without.

Thanks for all the advice. All went well on our trip to Wales with my horse and mini Shetland. We also have a plan for a new even lower breast bar made by my farrier.

Thank you. He seemed so relaxed about it all. I guess he’s low to the ground so good balance.
