Little Cob - Bad News...

Additional action for your list: Convince D1 that you were never going to be able to sell him anyway because you couldn't bear to let him go and that he's going to do what he was ALWAYS going to do: chill in a field.

We've been down this route. My daughter still adores the pony more than any of the other horses. He still adores her - she is his favourite human being. He copes fine when it's just me because she's away at Uni but when she is home he is just a different level of happy with her around. He can't be ridden, well walk and trot would be possible theoretically.

Get LC comfy as possible and stick him out with Dr Green and see how he is. He may surprise you yet.

You are all very kind, thank you.

I think that as we get used to the idea we will be okay. It's just today.

It's D2's thirteenth Birthday today - not going quite to plan.

We ordered a new scooter for D1 yesterday, for her Birthday in October. It's giving her something to think about, something positive. I know she'll enjoy riding the Dizz, but she knows that Dizz is mine and that will be at the back of her mind.

I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for a suitable horse, but given the scooter, will not be spending a lot of money on him/her! Will also depend on the field/livery/moving, etc.

Oh my brain hurts. Will feel better when I've spoken to our vet, she's very good at explainging things in simple form!

So so sorry to hear this MrsM :( You and LC have been through thick and thin! Wishing you, Daughter and LC all the best :) And I think it's lovely you're still keeping and looking after him, a horse is for life, not just whilst it can be ridden. xx

Seven year old Traditional cob. We've owned him for four years. Never sick nor sorry 'till this year when he tied up March/April time, got over that and then had two bouts of lameness.

Could not get to the root of the lameness, so went to the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket last Wednesday.

Got the results today...

Two issues:
One - neurological, but cannot pinpoint (x-rayed neck and back);
Two - sacroilliac joint problem. There was uptake on the scintography and his action points to it.

Just had a three day Bute trial. Results:
Better forward movement on both reins in walk and trot, canter still an issue;
Still the strange action behind (think constipated cow hind leg action);
Off-hind toe dragging worse than when off the Bute.

Prognosis:
Will be on Bute (or Danilon) for rest of life, probably;
Might be a light hack: walk and trot only, no fast work, no jumping. Will have to be on Bute, with the attendent potential issues that brings;
Might get worse. Don't know as do not know what 'it' is, or rather, what 'they' are.

Action:
Get him home;
Find a field so he can be on 24/7/365 turnout. If we can't find a field round here, send to a friend and have him on grass livery for six months and see what happens.

Daugher is in tears. We all knew she'd outgrown him, but he is hers and she is his. We know it could be so much worse, but at the moment... :(

I'm going to share Dizzy with her. She can treat Dizz as hers until she gets another horse. No idea when that will be, need to get head round this first.

So thank you for all your kind thoughts and wishes.

Horses eh? They make us and they break us. Hugs to you and your daughter.xx

Oh poo! So sorry to hear this Mrs M.

Sympathy and hot choccy to you and D1 and pats for LC - hope he stabilises at least.

And Happy Birthday to D2!

Remembered I had seen this title after I got your PM - I am so sorry :(:(:( I would never be without a horse but they really know how to give us heartache as well as so much pleasure :o

(((hugs))) for you Mrs M, and LC, and your daughters :(

Turn him away and see what happens. Things can right themselves, and he's still young enough to be resilient. And tell D1 that this means you can't ever sell him, so she'll have him for ever and ever - silver linings and all that!

MrsM I'm so sorry and saddened for all of you to hear that prognosis. It's not any consolation but he's been happy and with the best family he could have wished for over the last 4 years. Big hug x

Oh Mrs M, I bet you'll be glad when its January 1st and you can put this year behind you!

LC is lucky to have you as such loving, sensible owners and as others have said on here he is still young and who knows what will happen after being turned out for a while.

Sending healing vibes and hugs to you and your two and four legged family.

And more thank yous.

I think she will realise/understand that it means he's never going anywhere, but just not yet. I'd have sold my teeth before we would have let him go and she knows that.

It's been a bit of a day. We'd give up and buy a rocking horse to share, but that is him - his name is The Secret Rocking Horse.... D1 thought we were going to look at rocking horses when we went to see him, she didn't know she was getting a pony :)

Ohh Mrs M, you poor thing, and poor LC. If anybody deserves a bit of good luck it's you. Let's hope it comes in the form of a quick sales of your house and then a beautiful new home with lovey fields in which LC can keep the Dizz entertained in between you and D1 taking her off to do show jumping and dressage! Have a big hug and a splash of brandy in your hot choccy.

Life isn't fair Mrs. M is it? and bad stuff seems to happen to those who least deserve it!
Really sorry and I hope that it won't be as bad as they think and that LC will come through and be more than a field ornament.

Crossing all things that can be (comfortably) crossed!
