Seven year old Traditional cob. We've owned him for four years. Never sick nor sorry 'till this year when he tied up March/April time, got over that and then had two bouts of lameness.

Could not get to the root of the lameness, so went to the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket last Wednesday.

Got the results today...

Two issues:
One - neurological, but cannot pinpoint (x-rayed neck and back);
Two - sacroilliac joint problem. There was uptake on the scintography and his action points to it.

Just had a three day Bute trial. Results:
Better forward movement on both reins in walk and trot, canter still an issue;
Still the strange action behind (think constipated cow hind leg action);
Off-hind toe dragging worse than when off the Bute.

Prognosis:
Will be on Bute (or Danilon) for rest of life, probably;
Might be a light hack: walk and trot only, no fast work, no jumping. Will have to be on Bute, with the attendent potential issues that brings;
Might get worse. Don't know as do not know what 'it' is, or rather, what 'they' are.

Action:
Get him home;
Find a field so he can be on 24/7/365 turnout. If we can't find a field round here, send to a friend and have him on grass livery for six months and see what happens.

Daugher is in tears. We all knew she'd outgrown him, but he is hers and she is his. We know it could be so much worse, but at the moment... :(

I'm going to share Dizzy with her. She can treat Dizz as hers until she gets another horse. No idea when that will be, need to get head round this first.

So thank you for all your kind thoughts and wishes.

Very sorry to hear your news - never easy to hear something like that

I had a horse with similar symptoms a few years ago - he had scintigraphy/thermal imaging and all sorts of diagnostic tools (thank God he was insured!)

He was manipulated by Anthony Pusey of Ratley Vets, Banbury - turned out he had misaligned vertebra C6 & C7

He had lost his flashy trot - went all flat and shuffly
Lost his canter - couldn't keep it, kept changing behind, bucking or trotting
Had a constant migraine apparently which showed itself as headshaking from pressure on his intra orbital nerve

After treatment and 6 months of rest and long reining, he came right - gave him away to a friend of mine to hack and dressage on.

Hope LC gets more comfortable and you have some peace with him xx

Thank you all.

S - he has a physio on a regular basis. Is your chap something different to a normal equine physio?

Barry, our physio, is meant to be well reknown, but I'm open to all and any suggestions!!

that is awful, so sorry to hear that. field rest for 6 mths could do the trick maybe with some phiso. he is stunning just seen in other thread.

Thank you.

I have all crossed for the rest going some way towards helping.

The only downside is that my friend's place is many miles away, so D1 is not too happy, but unless I can find a field here I have no choice :(. Ho hum. D1 will come round to the idea, it's just hard.

S - how sad! So young :(. Thank you for the links, I'll drop them a line.

Yes, out to a field it is. So now we're frantically field hunting! He could go to a friend's place, but that's 140 miles away and D1 is sad at the thought of not seeing him (she has others to ride and exams coming up, but they won't replace LC).

poor little soul :( I hope that some time out and some good grass help.

I'd offer the field, but I'm a long way from you. I hope that you find somewhere close by so that LC and D1 can continue to support each other.

Thank you all :)

Current yard does not allow 24/7 turnout once the clocks have changed, so October time. This is a horse centric area, which is lovely, but makes finding a field a bit of a challenge! We have however, thanks to a lovely lady on here, found a field, so we'll be moving the gang onto it next week :). Will also bring Little Lad back to complete the herd :)

sorry to hear the results of your little man, you never know a good deal of rest, something good can come of it. Glad you have found somewhere near you,so that your daughter can have contact.
Always seems to happen to the good ones.
Have a hug and lots of best wishes you and daughter.

Thank you :). Your thoughts and wishes are very kind and very much appreciated.

D1 is bearing up now that she knows he will be nearby. He'll be in his own little herd, so won't have any trouble keeping up or trying to be the boss, so that is good.

Still haven't quite got my head round it. Hm. Don't want to I suppose.

Anyway, thank you again.
