My new horse still had a winter coat so i have spent the last fortnight brushing madly and its coming out well- But....there is nothing underneath!

He is almost bald on his chest and patches on his legs where i have scrubbed with a rubber curry and the hair is moulting fast now on his neck and body- again nothing coming through?

Now is the bit where you re-assure me! (next is the bit where i call the vet in a panic!)

Haha I dont literally mean scrubbed I have a jelly groomer thing and do circular motions with it.
I also have a shedding blade and use it on his quarters and neck but he's not really got enough fat covering over his bones and i think its too harsh there!
In places tho for example a new patch tonight, by his tail i went over with the blade and the whole lot came away- a patch roughly 4" round all in one go. I'm not scraping hard at all (like i say i'm worried about hurting him!)
I'm not a novice/beginner owner and have had lots of horses/ponies but nothing so run down seeming- its just throwing things at me i've never come across!

This happened to mine this year too. Suddenly she went from Hairy Monster to baldy lady!! I have a theory about the really cold weather etc. But not real information just that quite a few have done this on our yard. We've gone ballistic with the lice poweder just in case but a few weeks down the line, no evidence of parasites and the summer coat's coming through nicely.

Hi,

I've just taken on another ex racer to add to my collection (of only 2! lol) She is just 5 yrs old and in need of some serious conditioning and she too is developing almost bald patches particularly on the underside of her neck and withers...! I bought some D-itch spray even though she doesnt seem to be itchy... the skin looks a little dry and I thought maybe this may help moisturise??

I've never had a horse in poor condition and she too is throwing things at me I've not seen before too so you aren't alone there!!

Anyone any other ideas on supplements etc??

my mare had dry skin under winter coat, added couple table spoons of corn oil to her feed (£2 bottle from asda) and 5 days later....no flakes!

Oh how strange! yes this one's skin looks dry also, I gave him a bath today and almost thought about rubbing some emollient like E45 or similar in?. Mine is also ex racer and not at all itchy!
I have put oil in his feed to maybe help with skin condition.
Good luck with yours!
