Boy wasn't it absolutely sweltering!! I thought I was going to collapse, never mind the poor horses!

Well our dressage was pretty dreadfull and the very nice and happy judge gave us a v.underserved 37 ! I suppose that we managed to do everything in the right places this time and stayed in the arena... it was such a shame because I had him working absolutely beautifully for about 15 mins, his trot was beginning to be absolutely awesome. Then it was as though he suddenly decided; Right thats it, I've had enough!! I'm going to go charging off everywhere!! So that is what he tried to do. I actually had to sock him in the mouth a few times which I hate doing. Tried everything to make him calm down and relax again- leg yield, shoulder in, half pass, counter canter, a nice long walk on a relaxed rein, patting him, talking to him...it was no good, he just got crosser and crosser...

Showjumping, I had one of my old trainers helping me with the warm up, she hasnt really seen much of W before, and she promptly declared that W was absolutely dreadfull and couldnt canter and couldnt jump and that we shouldnt be there! I do know that she is absolutely right about his canter, but...this was only a little intro. So we were made to jump everything from trot in the warm up. I suppose it did help doing it like that. We went in and were both absolutely dreadfull, but it was an absolute miracle- a clear round. Somehow we got round.

The cross country was an absolutely gorgeous track, really long, bold and galloping, plenty of questions, little combinations, banks, drops, ditches etc. W set of quite nicely, and did as he was told, up until the water, where he simply refused to walk into it. It was a very inviting water, there was no excuse really. He simply refused to go near it and spent ages standing there shuffling his feet. I was absolutely convinced that we had been eliminated about three times over, but again the gods were looking down on us, and we only picked up two refusals...so on we went round the rest of the course, and he did it all fairly nicely, although he wasn't particularly enthusiastic. He does find it reallly difficult to just jump out of his stride, as his canter is not engaged, so jumping like that is simply not giving him confidence. Its still all a bit of an eye opener for him I guess.

He is entered for West Wilts next week, I will do that one, then call it a day with the eventing for this year I think. Then we will spend the next year learning how to canter, then I suppose we will try the eventing again next June if I feel like it, don't know why but I feel totally fed up by the whole thing and have just had enough of horses because I never improve them much and they never even go the blindest bit nicely at all

My BE results are shockingly embarassing so why on earth do I carry on. Its so hard because to be a top event rider has been my one and only dream and the only thing that I have lived for. I think that Trevor who took me round a few intermediates gave me a completely false sense of my own ability, when in reality it was never me being a good rider it was him being an absolutely amazingly clever and intelligent horse. Now I cant even do a poxy Intro and I do have a jolly good horse ( even if it cant canter.) Oh well. I am sure that I will bounce back again and be mad keen again in another couple of weeks!!

I know exactly how you feel, we've had some quite rude comments about my new horse from an instructor through PC, and I've just decided that I know my horse, have faith in us, have faith in him, and will prove them all wrong.

I hope you get through this and come out all guns blazing next season:)

Lol,jeez E you are doing soooo well !! But I know, I do need a kick up the backside!! As everyone said it was a positive result today really. I just hate doing things badly. Would much rather have a well ridden 8 fault SJ round then a badly ridden clear round SJ !!

I feel your pain, I am miserable too about eventing, come surfing with me instead, I have picked that up far quicker than riding! I have given up trying to event entirely for the time being, in fact in the last 3 weeks I have sat on my horse twice.

Oh I agree totally, much rather have some down but have a decent round than a lucky clear, but you know he can jump and if you are getting lucky clears when he is bad think what he will be like when he is good...

We never had lucky clears as when we were bad we annihilated them

Thanks, I think it was my trainers comments that just knocked me for six TBH. I should not be affected by these things and should just shrug it off! Hopefully we will prove everybody wrong next year ( when I regain my energy and enthusiasm!! ) Hope that you can prove all your doubters wrong too!!

You know I was just thinking about surfing!! How cool must it be!!

Its just like you never ever go forward with eventing, your results never get better. Unless you have had ££££ shelved into training and into horsepower, us mere mortals dont stand a chance!!

I spent last week surfing and bodyboarding in Croyde - lec persuaded me and OH to go for the weekend and we didn't come home till Thursday! Seriously - first surf lesson, second wave I caught, stood up - brilliant. After two lessons I could stand up, catch waves before they broke go straight and turn right. Turning left is beyond me, but hey, can't have everything after 2 lessons! You should come next time we go!

The thing which has got me down most about eventing is that at my first event of the season, Aldon, I finished on 72.80, at Nutwell Court (last one I completed) I finished on 47.40. Now that is an improvement of 25.40 - so the equivalent of improving the dressage by 1.4, having one fewer SJ down and not having a stop XC. At Aldon I finished 20th, at NC I finished.....yep, 20th. So despite my marks going down effectively for each phase, I have got no bloody better!

Think of the positives of today, you managed a clear round SJ where many didnt and it is a very colourful SJ course there. You also got round the xc in one piece even if you did get 2 stops at the winter, even the PN horses were having problems there on friday and saturday.

Sorry you had a bad day - but I think you should be very proud of going clear round the SJ as there weren't that many - it was definitely the spookiest SJ I have seen at Intro!!! I did keep an eye out for you when I was finished but was in my own little world for most of the day!!!!

The surfing sounds amazing, much more rewarding and obv. far cheaper ....
The marks/placing thing just sounds oh-so- familiar.....remembering from when I did Novices with Trev... you have to be extremely lucky and impossibly good to win any prizes
frown.gif

Thanks Liz...I know..lots of positives I guess!! Good point about the PN's also having trouble at the water- so maybe it was not as kind and easy as I thought it looked so perhaps W can be excused for this time!!

Thanks L, he was soo generous bless him, considering the places I put him to some of the fences! Just replied to your other post..

OB, nasty moments come and go, to all of us.
I've fallen down many times but, never let those temporary slumps stop my dreams and ambitions.
Don't let someonelse's comments affect you! I think she should have tried to help instead of making those unnecessary comments; absolutely out of place. I would say to her: Don't damn the darkness; light a candle!!! Helping is what instructors are supposed to do.
It's human to fall down, and it's wise to get up and walk! Now is the moment when you have to put everything you have on this. Now is the moment when you have to train most! And believe me, results will come. But patience, patience. Woody is a great horse, but immature; give him time, and keep training, keep training!!
You are such a perfectionist; so are many of us. But I know I'm not perfect so, I have to train very hard.

How were your nerves before stressage? Why did Woody suddenly decided all was wrong???
And, making a clear round in SJ was not being lucky; you made it because you trained for it.

Don't be so hard on yourself. You are talented and enthusiastic. Please don't stop.
Sincere (((hugs))) and best wishes!!!!!!

Naw please dont be so down.
He isnt easy, he has a canter which isnt yet established.
When it does he will be a great horse.
Mattingley is a great course, the water is going away from the lorries so maybe he was being a bit nappy? Snoop has no problem with water but he took it upon himself to rear and carry on before cantering happily into the water *rolls eyes*

Do WW and then do some intensive training.

Snoopys canter now is a million times better than it was a year ago, and can canter which makes jumping SOOOOO much easier
smile.gif

sorry you are deeling so down about it.!
i saw your SJ round and i thought you did a really good job of riding him - he didn't look easy.!!!
fingers crossed you have more fun at WW..
smile.gif

Keep going. You forget sitting on my horse at Aldon and telling me he could not canter which was a fair comment. 3 years later he can canter. My first season I spent all the time hunting my horse round and all the 20s you see on my record in that season are him being a git bag as I had no steering. He would jump the tough stuff and yet fall out through his shoulder and spook at easier fences. As for water first time schooling could not get my horse anywhere near it, 2nd time he would just about go and he still likes to look and trot through it. I still have an arguement about puddles!
I have some great exercises for tense horses which really work and that is why my dressage scores have come right down as now horse is in a routine warming up. They are very similar to what lars sederholm teaches and gives horses a routine for anywhere that they know straightaway what they are doing and can relax.

Sorry to hijack but what are the exercises? My horse gets very tense in the dressage which can cost us a lot of marks!!

Dont you DARE give up Missus...!

I'm going to go get the pics from Woody at Hoplands and compare them to the ones we got last week at Tweseldown to show you the improvment that you HAVE made...! Woody will never be easy and yes he needs work on the flat to change how he moves and how he holds himself but it WILL come, ok? Finish this season, get stuck into the SJ and dressage over the winter and you'll be flying next season....

Lx

Guys, thank you I am feeling much more positive today. I realise that the long and short of it is that I only have two things to sort out before he is getting his double clears- his canter and his water jumps!! so as you say, when he gets that sorted he is up and away !( though easier said then done!)
AandK- I am mortified that anyone should have had to had suffered the embarassment of watching my showjumping!!
grin.gif

BB's- Lol at Snoopy!! Yes the water was going away from the horses, and he does have a bit of a nap in him. I know, jumping is just twenty times easier when the canter is good, and just virtually impossible to do when the canter is not there, also when you have a horse with a bad canter, it makes anyone feel like a hopeless rider!! Which I guess is what has happened with me. Get on a horse with a good canter and you instantly feel like a bit more of a pro!

LEC- look forward to hearing about those tips! Would be fab if they do work..

Scarlett- thank you!! Yes, we have come a long way since Hoplands, where we barely had controll and could barely steer from fence 1 to 2 !! Lol...yes I do have to keep remembering how far we've come.

Uncle dear... I have PM'ed you !

You should be a lot more postive all those problems are sortable. the canter will come with work - have you tried lunging in a pessoa?

Water well just wait til winter and keep riding out in the wettest horriblist weather and they soon get the idea. Looking forward to seeing you at WW see you are on quite early too!

Give yourself a break girl- Woody is a blooming difficult horse, not many would be able to contain his raw power! You know that he could be awesome but you havent had him long and he is going to take time.

The clear sj is a huge acheivement and the xc will come. Moon wasnt a natural xc horse by any stretch of the imagination and our record is appalling too but they come into their own given a bit of time.

Very pleased to hear you're feeling more positive today - methinks you'll be a winner before you know it. Don't know you or your horse but others obviously do and if they say you can do it - you can do it
smile.gif
Rosie had 7 poles + a time fault yesterday - she was so miserable we didn't know what to do with her but today she's talking about how much better it's gonna be next time. I think it happens to everyone at some point but you will get to grips with your horse and your demons. Good luck

Welldone for completing, sounds like he's going to be great when it all comes together
smile.gif
I'm the same in that I'm a real perfectionist - I was at L.Mattingley on Friday and didn't have a great day and was so so annoyed with myself at my riding, but looking back now there are always positives to take from a day
smile.gif

It will definitely all come - water is just a case of 'practise makes perfect', and the canter I'm sure will just keep on improving - I suspect your old trainer didn't appreciate how its improved already - keep going, and goodluck at west wilts
laugh.gif

I will most definately keep on going!!
cool.gif
It must be achievable. SJ I have only just moved to a yard with an arena, so only just started lunging him in side reins, will progress to a pessoa soon. Its unbelievable how difficult he finds it to canter on the lunge! It does highlight how we dont stand a chance really when it comes to trying to jump round a course and do a dressage test. Lots more lunging for sure...

Boss- valid points I know...I guess its cos I am thinking that W is 8 now...so that automatically means that I am expecting far more from him...when in reality, he should be treated like a complete 4 year old just starting out..

Rosiefan!! Thank you !
cool.gif
cool.gif

PapaFrita- PMSL you don't half put yourself down!! Woody would SJ faaar better with you on board!!
cool.gif
I am a hopeless SJ er !!

jxd-sorry to hear that your day did not go well either!! It is so frustrating isn't it!! Thank you for your words, am determined now to have a good crack at west wilts and do as well as we can do
smile.gif

OB - shall we book the SJ arena at Hoplands and go practise round a course...? I shall ask R nicely if she can come too...
wink.gif
Can wait til after XC and all the other stuff you have going on?
