Although I have been a member of this board for a while, I have never really shown off my horses! I have 3, one is on loan. But introducing, Little Monkey.
Monkey was born at my old livery yard. I didn't have anything to do with her really. I kept my other horse there and just saw Monkey in the field.
Before I owned monkey. She is by a well known steeple chaser, so she is full TB X with Hanovarian and new forest.
April 2007
She always gave her mum the run around and didnt follow or do as she was told!
Growing up
Early 2008: (band tempered, aggressive and dangerous)
Monkey was weaned from her mother too early. She was stabled 24/7 for about 2 months due to getting a nail in her foot somehow and then had suspected gastric ulcers. She became extremely aggressive and no one would go near her. She would get fed over the door, no one would go in the stable. One time, a girl came up and took her out her stable. You could not touch her without her kicking or biting you, not only due to being stabled but the pain she went through with the vet and getting the nail out her foot. She was extremely aggressive.
I decided to go in the stable with her and start making friends. Everyone thought I was mad and warned me not to.
She was put onto stud mix as the owner felt guilty she wasn't being fed enough........and at about 11 or 12 months, the owner felt guilty for taking her away from her mum too early so she started suckling her mum again..........
She hadn't done anything. Only had a head collar on. She was hardly touched or groomed. You couldn't touch her!
Not long after this, her owner asked if I wanted to buy her. I wasn't sure, but I did. Her owner was quite controlling, bad tempered but an unwell lady, which is such a shame as she could be very kind hearted, so I kept her feed the same, although I knew she shouldn't be on it and needed to change.
She hardly had anything done with her. She barely knew how to lead. Soon after she knew, I took her for very very short walks out. SHE LOVED IT!! She was now mine.
2008 sometime. I had a trainer out to help my other horse lload, and we did some ground work with monkey. This has continued to this very day.
We went through hard times. The amount of times I got kicked and bitten was unbelievable. I got so many bruises and in pain just from her. I remember getting kicked in my chest and falling over winded. She was going to take a lot of work and trust. But I never gave up on her.
Summer 2008
The livery where I was at got too much. I couldn't cope the owner being so horrible to me, but it was not her fault as she was a very ill lady. It was wearing me down, I was crying all the time and getting blamed for things and shouted at, so I moved my 2 horses.
I was told distinctively as I left that I would never cope with her, Monkey.
I changed her feed straight away to alfa and Top spec leisure time feed balancer. She isn't passported as Monkey but after the time I had had at the old livery I wanted to forget all associations. Monkey as a name, just came along, I wasn't intending to change it.

Now she is such a little darling. I love her to pieces. I can touch her all over anywhere I want. If someone goes into the field she will try and scare them, put ears back and walk toward them to test you. She doesn't mean it. she tries it on with everyone but me. She gets groomed, goes in her stable lovely now, has general manners, tying up, leading, rugs on/off, farrier, dentist, vet, introduced to saddle, bit, going out for walks, picking her feet up, seeing traffic, getting used to voice commands, introduced to trailer, been for a trip around the field getting used to fly spray and very scary fly masks(!) and some very rare long reining... Time and patience gets you anywhere. I can't believe how much we have been through already.
I am going to think about breaking her in when shes 4.
I love my little darling. She takes everything in her stride and is so inquisitive. She is scared of less things than my other horse! I hope she will make me a good eventer one day. Even so, shes with me for always.
