Little Rant !!!

Having spent an half an hour jet washing a school after a lady fell whist riding in a loose hat before, i always ride in a hat and refuse to ride near people who don't. I know its personal choice but i see it as my choice never to have to see any part of their head apart from what im supposed to see.

Although I wear a hat, I wouldn't dream of telling an acquaintance to wear one. For over 14's it's still a personal and a culture influenced choice.

Of course wearing a hat lessens risk but if we are to accuse the rider sedately tootling round a menage on a cob without a hat of being selfish, then surely, the rider doing XC on a horse with dubious breaks is more selfish despite wearing a hat ?

Nice change of subject, but the topic is wearing hats, not the dangers of xc riding on poorly schooled horse

My response was in relation to posts about people being selfish because of the effect a head injury had on family/friends/NHS etc, etc.

The most common cause of head injury is due to car accidents to both passengers and pedestrians. In the elderly, its due to falls and in children, bicycles and playground falls.

So are the Outraged-At-Hatless-Riders equally outraged at car passengers and pedestrians not wearing a helmet ? Do your children wear a helmet when they play on a slide ? Does granny wear a helmet when she carries the tea tray ? Do you wear a helmet when you climb a ladder to wash the windows ?

Surely, the indignation should apply to all high risk activities ?

I reiterate, I do ride in a hat, but I would not so rude as to demand that another adult wear a hat and/or refuse to ride with them.

I used to do exactly what the op said - wouldn't dream of riding without a hat with a saddle and bridle, but didn't bother with just a headcollar! It wasn't until someone said something that I actually thought about what I was doing - and promptly started wearing a hat all the time...

I fell off my horse.

I ended up in A+E and unconcious for 2 days. Even now, 2 months later I get dizzy and have horrible migraines, but I was/am very lucky it wasn't worse. And I was wearing my hat.
