Little things that really grate....

I'm on one.....

Unnecessary rugging. People who chuck a heavy weight on their chubby native youngster because their poor baby might get cold. It's an out of work native, it's fine!

Fat show ponies that win. Enough said.

People that get off their horses out hacking when they play up a little and lead them home. You brought the pony to ride it, not hold his hand out walking.

People who think horses that aren't stabled in winter are cruelty cases. Once got told I was cruel for not bringing in my rugged native forest pony.....

Jumping 3/4 year olds. Don't think it's right. IMO five is the earliest age jumping should be introduced.

People who think adults should only ride horses, not ponies.

People that lie.. Age, height, capability, price etc etc etc. I don't see the point in making out that your horse is something it's not  The original "I didn't do it" line, when they obviously did!

People that don't look after their horses properly and/or expect other people to do it. We had two of these on our yard  The main culprit has recently left. Took two of her horses and left the other (mainly because it wouldn't catch - due to being repeatedly hit in the face with a headcollar!!) He is now the "yard pony" :D

Novices that don't listen to advice.. eg. riding a 16.1 cob x in a 12.2 Welsh B's saddle and wondering why he threw you off when he was supposed to be a "novice ride" (freshly broken 5 year old!!!)

A lot of things really. Lol.

Drivers who "own" the road!! We were out riding yesterday, going along a stretch of road that's a buggar to ride down anyway (right by the yard, but there's a very loud air birdscarer just at the side of the road which goes off every 10mins or so). Cue white van man come flying down the road towards us at what must've been at least 50mph. I'm the lead, on a 4yo cob who's only been riding out for the past 6wks or so, and so I ask him to slow down. Know what he does? Sticks a finger up, and puts his foot down as he goes past. We were viz-ed up to the ears, in single file, doing nothing (that I'm aware of) that was inconsiderate to drivers. It's times like that which make me wish I carried a few chunks of brick with me out hacking.

People who judge me for having horses and assume that therefore I'm rolling in it. Of course, horses are a luxury but I paid for them with my money and I do all the work and run them as cheaply as I can.
*Disclaimer* I am not claiming to be poor, hard off or anything of the sort. However I'm not exactly stinking rich either and I go without a lot to keep my horses.

Another one for people thinking I'm rich because I have horses .. They are kept as cheaply as possible and probably cost me less a month than some people my age spend on booze/clubbing :@

On that note, I worked out the other day it costs me more to run my car than to keep my 3 horses. Granted that's with a stupid comute in a Landy, but...

On the other side... People that look down their nose at me because I don't own my own horse, and get my horsey fix my working part time at a RS
There's a lot of people like that around me

People who empty their barrow either in the track up the muckheap or right at the base so you have to move it for them. Walk a bit further or tip it to the side! Forestfantasy, I agree People who 'mushroom' haylage bales! grrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!! . Walk around the bale and unwrap it like a loo roll, it is not that hard! I also get irrrationally angry at people who dont seem to notice whe water troughs need the ice broken or filled up.Do they think that their horses dont drink when they are out?

Toast not being buttered right to the edge :D

Horsewise, on here?

The "OMG! Poor horsey, ponio, coblet, look at this ad" :(

Then slag a picture off left right and centre. FGS. If you are concerned phone up and talk to the people, find out the facts, call the welfare or buy the blasted thing yourself. (Oh dear, did I call it a thing? - whoops)

Ooh thought of another one ..
People that sat 'Ponies can't do the things a horse can' really winds me up! Always love the look on their face when my pony proves them wrong :D

What really gets my goat is people who think they know your horse better than you.
For example earlier this week we were due to get a particularly cold night, it was dry so i decided my girl would be fine out with lots of hay, she is a yak and also a very fit and healthy young coblet.
I sensed said people were not impressed by me leaving MY horse out as they thought it much too cold. FGS mind your own. Don't get me wrong, it is wonderful that people care, but my girl is a healthy specimen, and I was not born yesterday and I feel I know well enough myself how to manage my horsey.

I never ask people if they are bringing their horse in or rugging theirs because its cold or such like, I leave people to look after their own horses. Just because one horse feels the cold very easily and 'likes' being stabled does not mean the next horse is the same

Novices who think they know everything, go on about how naughty their pony when it could practially be cannonised, fall off for no apparent reason, dont tell the bleeding animal off when it's ill-mannered and just sit there tense and clinging on, don't appreciate the importance of flatwork and think jumping is just charging round pointing at fences and kicking, think jumps can be used as a reward randomly when trying to settle a horse into a new arena... I could go on  :D

Now, I KNOW this is about me. Please, if you're going to say things about me, do name and shame me! It seems far less b!tchy that way ;)

Pople who act like they know it all when they dont.

People who interfere for no reason.

People who critisise the equipment you use- then use the same thing!

Bridles hung up messily

People who "use" aka steal your food, detangler (someone once used half a bottle of mine in one go):eek:

Actually, you don't "know" anything - you suspect I mean you.

I can't confirm or deny - it's not just me who would be affected by such a statement.

Muzzles. Horrible things. Ride it, don't muzzle it! (serious slating coming my way!!)

Obsessive grooming. People that groom their ponies to an inch of their life before they would contemplate going for a hack. Nothing wrong with it, just wonder where people find the time! A quick sweep with a brush over tack area do mine fine.

People who ride in treeless saddles without the necessary saddle pad! Argh!

People who don't get their tack and horses back checked regularly. In my opinion it needs doing yearly AT LEAST irregardless of if you think anything is wrong.

The 'don't smack him!' owner. When I was young, there was a lady that took lessons at the riding school. A pony there full on tried to take a chunk out of a young girls arm, the girl was told off for giving him a smack. That really annoys me, a well timed smack is often the easiest thing for a horse to understand!

You saved me the effort of posting! That list ticked all of my pet hates :D

people who think because the horse has a nice pop in it it can jump a 1.10m course easy but refuse to do flat work because its good at jumping.... the only bit of jumping you need is getting over the fence not difficult the rest is blooming flat work!

also people who dont ride their horses for months and then all of a sudden its cantering and jumping with no fittening up and then wonder why their horses get sour and are sore

anddd people who think that they are that knowledgeable that they can tell you what to do, what they dont like about the way you do your horses, and how it should be done and how down right rude they are and then they just go off into their own little perfect world completely oblivious to the fact that they have been down right rude to you! how do they not notice?!

Horsey people who lie all the time!! Especially when you know it's not true!! One ex friend was particularly bad. We would go to a show and they would tell everyone at the yard how well their horse jumped when it refused everything! Then involve me by telling the story in front of me, so I had to agree!! I'm honest, if I did rubbish I will happil say :)

OH YES! Deffinately this also. And also not just about their horse they also lie about things they've done etc etc when so blantently un true it actually almost makes it funny.

Why do people think that flash nosebands are gadgets and unnecessary. My horse constantly tries to put her tounge over the bit without one when being lunged or schooled! If she didn't need one she wouldn't have one!

As that's a direct question I'll answer it. Because most of them are. If you try to buy a bridle without one nowadays you'll find it's quite hard. So most people just do them up and get on with it regardless of whether the horse needs it. In your own horse's case that may be the best solution - but had you considered that other once-fashionable item, the drop noseband, which does the job better and can be correctly fitted, unlike the majority of today's fashion item flashes: it is so rare to see one correctly designed, let alone correctly fitted.

Not a lot really.... If its not hurting the horse I dont worry; I guess when you see horses out with a thick layer of snow on the ground and not an ounce of hay/haylage in sight... that gets me slightly annoyed..

The mistreated/under weight / uncared for horses.. that really gets my knickers in a twist!

what if they are out to strech their legs,...not eat as they are lami prone etc? I have issues at my yard with people thinking they are doing the right thing by putting hay in with my horse when she is on a strict diet. It isnt fair on her for them to do this, nor me for them to think I am not caring. I care a lot and thats why I do what I do, to not let her get ill. Just saying, there may be an underlying issue which you dont know of, not being the horses owner.

I have been looking for a drop noseband for ages actually but can't seem to find a tack shop that stocks them anymore!

The thing that grates, is the yard know it all who feels it necessary to criticise and comment on other people and what they do/don't do with their horses - how they're wasted, how they should be broken in, when in fact they have absolutely NO experience of doing anything like it themselves but have read a few books and also think they're now a horsemanship manual.
Every yard has one....

I had a friend on my old yard who came home from a local show with a rosette and a pic of her horse jumping a fence on the biggest course she'd ever done. She was absolutely thrilled and proud and was happily showing her prize to us and we were all really pleased for her. Then one girl, who jumped affiliated, peered over at the picture, sneered and said "Wow, I don't even START at that height"
How nasty was that? So I say, like Bambi's little mate Thumper, 'If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all'
And I hate yard bullies, who make life miserable for some people :(
Probably why I rent my own place now!! :D

Expect they'll start reappearing soon, along with bib martingales, going on the number of showjumpers using them at the moment.

Things that grate....mmm...I've got loads, cos I'm a grumpy mare! People leaving hoof pickings/wheelbarrow spillage and other detritus outside your stable (not anymore though-yippee!), people letting their horses wreck your stuff and not doing anything about it-"oh it wasn't me". General inconsideration and bad manners. Bad manners. People saying their horse is out of x when referring to the sire. Newsflash! They come out of mares, put there by stallions :p

Oh, and bad manners. :D

not horse related but when its minus outside and the die hard fashion conscious are walking around in tiny jackets you would wear in summer.Get a coat for gods sake;)

People who use horses as chairs at a show
People who dont jump off when through the finish after xc, and amble back to their lorry onboard.:(
The "expert" who'll get your horse on your lorry :D

People who say 'oh your so hard on your horse/pony, but isn't he well behaved' Duhh!! Its called boundries
And riders riding 2 abreast down narrow roads with no reflective kit chatting to each other on long reins who fail to say thank you when you slowly go round them!
People riding with the chin strap undone, whats the point!
