Little things that really grate....

My pet hates are:

Rugs and headcollars with a clip fastening being fastened with the clip pointing out so that it can hook on to anything and everything.

Interesting, as it bugs me with the clips pointing in I was always taught to have them pointing out so it can't catch the horse's skin, ie. leadrope clip pointing away from chin so don't catch chin by mistake.

I'm on one.....

Unnecessary rugging. People who chuck a heavy weight on their chubby native youngster because their poor baby might get cold. It's an out of work native, it's fine!

People who think horses that aren't stabled in winter are cruelty cases. Once got told I was cruel for not bringing in my rugged native forest pony.....

GASP! You bad, cruel person you! You RUG your Native?? I'm super mean, mine are a nice weight, unrugged and kept out 24/7.

I also get irrrationally angry at people who dont seem to notice whe water troughs need the ice broken or filled up.Do they think that their horses dont drink when they are out?

Tell that to mine. Before I get a chance to break the ice, there's a highland shaped round hoof hole in the ice. But, yes I still break it up and refill it for them.




I don't really have any complaints. Provided the horse is looked after and cared for, then I've learned not to bother as it would just make me stressed and chances are the owner wouldn't be bothered in the slightest.
If someone is in bother, I might suggest a tip but other than that I just walk away - unless there's abuse of course.

People on either side of me who take up too much space outside their stables, haybarn and tackroom that infringes on mine, leaving me a tiny slither - and their complete ignorance of their own behaviour. oh and miserable ***** with faces like shovels all the time, loose dogs on the yard, loud groups of spoilt teenagers with bad social skills hanging around, cliques that sit around smoking fags and never ride their horses

Ignorance, bad manners, bullying in animals and people

People that give me derisory looks when my Jack x Lakey x alligator/warthog combo goes off on one, despie the fact she is muzzled and always on the lead. I am not an idiot, have bred, shown and trained field trial champions, its just how she is. She has had every type of deterrent, incentive, reasoning, spray collars, dog borstal etc and the conclusion is it's just her nature. I just hate that pitying look

Nothing annoys me unless it has to do with me.

I.e people trying to "help" me wth my horse when they have never sat on her and have no idea how sharp and difficult she is to ride. spooking my horse by running up her backside.

Expecting me to handle rude horses that they let run rings around them. I refuse to be injured by anyone else's horse.

Other than that unless the horse is emaciated or feet like ski's etc, It doesn't bother me what others do with their horses.

There are a few things that drive me nuts, strong bits where schooling and lessons would work better. People backing horses too young and people who ride on the road with no hiviz.

Horse people and dog people who are convinced that their animal has "quirks" that no one else can train out /stop. That they are the only person in the world that can cope with it, ride it, put up with it. Bless, if it make them feel needed and important.

Not slating but with an arthritic cob who cant stand in a stable because he seizes up and can only walk out along with the fact he lives literally off fresh airand a cushing and laminitic prone pony who can escape from ANYWHERE, i will continue with them being muzzled lol

riders who are too quick to use the whip even when the horse just stumbles, it really annoys me they have legs use them, they have a voice encourage them and they have a seat and if they were confident and relaxed they would use their seat to sit the horse during these times, but no the whip comes out first.

Over rugging. I have two liveries who over rug their horses and it drives me insane! This is why I have limited the number of DIYs on my yard to just three...

Roughed off, out of work TBs who are stabled at night, unclipped and in a field with good grass do NOT need to wear two heavy stable rugs, a duvet, a fleece AND heavy turnout rug. That's more than I have on my fully clipped 26 yr old poor doer!

I have to do tthe haynet tying thing as my horse loves to undo quick release knots, and then the haynet is on the floor, round her feet. If I put the end through the loop, it stops her.

Seriously though, who cares if someone else thinks their horse is bigger, younger or better than it really is? Or uses different tack or puts bling on it? Unless the horse is obviously suffering and there's something I can do about it I'm not really interested.

We bought our first pony and counteracted the "expensive" comment with "Yes, but it was cheaper to buy than your plasma TV and cheaper each month than your Sky contract, neither of which we have." Which was true at the time and we still don't have a plasma TV or Sky, can't afford with with all these blasted horses

I used to get similar when I had my horse in training, and it drove me nuts - its nobodys business what I do with my money!! - he cost me £850 a month to be there, and when people found out I got the "oh thats so expensive" type comments, then my friend told me that she and her husband paid £840 a month for their daughter to go to nursery school 5 mornings a week.... from that moment on I was very happy to point out that my horse (who was effectively my child) was at FULL livery, including riding,shoes and feed - 7 days a week, for £10 a month more than my friend paid for 20 hours nursery care, 5 days a week....

These days I get hacked off with people trying to tell me who to send my mare to... it gets very wearing explaining that while I am well aware that her 4 year old by Avonbridge has won 6 and been placed in over 2/3 of his races, BUT I dont want to send her back to him - I love the 4 year old,always have,from the moment he came out - and if I dont get an exact clone of him,I would be ridiculously disappointed. Its quite hard to politely tell them that if they would like to lease her from me for 18 months, they are welcome to send her to him - but while she is MY horse, and its MY money and its ME who is going to have to decide wether to keep or sell each foal that she produces, it will be ME who decides where she goes....

just makes me cross- its nobodys business but mine - and while i dont mind people having ideas and suggestions, the insistance I get from some so called "friends" (including a trainer, who will never have a horse of mine in training becuase Id quite like to stay friends with her!!) really annoys me !!

(GOD that felt good to get off my chest, he won again last Monday and came 3rd on Friday, and Ive had it again!!!)

Sorry, joining the thread late but couldn't resist a bit of an auld moan

People's laziness when it comes to horses and I don't mean just short cuts, I mean people who just can't be @r$ed. For example, not using girth loops/ loops of numnahs or not running up stirrup leathers.

People's assumptions about me and my horse, like taking one look at my horse and assuming that he cannot jump because he's not a flashy sport horse.
Though I do laugh when people assume that he's slow and ploddy... not the case

The people who live to lie... and just generally talk cr@p about their little darling horses (monsters) and evidently know all I just listen and nod along for a while and then when they start giving advice I make a swift exit. But at the end of the day I can't stand listening to someone telling me about their 14.2hh connie (who, last week was a 14hh arab cross and has been 8 for the last 3 years) who could be jumping grand prix, and is "on the bit" because it is ridden in a bungee every second day and is crazy (ehh.. try never ridden and full of oats?)
