Can anybody tell me what colour liver chestnuts are when they are foals ? as I am puzzled about my 7 week old foal. She was born a bright chestnut which was a bit of a shock as her dam is dark bay and her sire a piebald and her full sister a skewbald. She rubbed a small patch of hair off under her neck within a week or so of birth and it has grown back dark brown or black (there are a few small areas on her legs the same) & the roots of her mane are dark (just like her roots need retouching !! ) and she has dark patches around her eyes which looks like eyeliner. The rest of her remains chestnut. Any ideas ???

At my yard, a black mare who's a bit roany, to a brown stallion, out pops a bright chestnut

And she is now going liver chestnut, and she looks much better for it! No chestnut mare syndrome

How old was she before she changed ? she was a real bright chestnut as a young foal. Mine also has that multi coloured tail just like her. I don't dislike the chestnut colour at all (in fact my husband prefers it to a coloured foal) its just she was bred to sell and chestnut fillies get a bad press !!
