My pony is in hospital with liver failure. He is 10 years old. Been in there just two days. Vet says he is blind but his retina is ok. He seems to be picking up in himself but does anyone know how long he is likely to be blind for. Any help would be so appreciated.

Thanks bonkers. It was scary sat night. Called vet because his breathing was funny. Time they got there he was striding round his paddock then started to trot round then got caught in bushes and fence. We did not realise he could not see.got him in stable and he was climbing the walls. Should have gone to vets then but too dangerous. We stayed with him all sat night and he had calmed down next morning enough to travel. He is now eating and weeping and point. Had biopsy today and we need to wait for results to see if his liver is sa able. If not that's it for him. Visited him tonight and he's throwing his feed bucket about and seems so much better.

Thanks peregrine Falcon. Visited him last night. Seems much better but still can't see. He is my granddaughters pony. How long was your pony unwell for

She was in "horsespital" for two nights. Took her a good week to start eating/drinking normally again. IM antibiotics were administered daily for 5 (I think)days. Then we started grazing her out in hand after that. She had liver tonic for several weeks and I now feed her milk thistle on a daily basis.

She had a liver scan which fortunately showed no damage but we never got to the cause.

It's horrible when they're so poorly, my son was so upset.

How is your pony doing? I sat with one who died of liver failure and it was awful, so if the biopsy is very bad then you would be saving him a lot of pain and distress by letting him go. I hope that isn't the case for you, livers are remarkable things. My horse had raised enzymes for the last 2 years but was not symptomatic, or at least not significantly, and finally had a normal blood test last month, but he is referred to as having hepatic injury/assault rather than liver failure. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

sending you healing vibes - my donkey is in horsepital (RVC) for gastric compaction which wont clear. My pony has liver issues and had biopsy, vets put her on liver support (legaphyton) and I give her milk thistle and licorice.

Thanks Kat PT. Quick update biopsy came back score of 8 moderate to severe. He is very well in himself. Been taken to graze in hand. Vets are reducing medication and if he hold his own we can care for him at home. If he shows any signs of decline will be PTS as Saturday really was horrendous. Looks like he can now see a bit. HGA praying for your little donkey. Hope the vets can sort it for him
