Meg is an 11yp border collie who has hip dysplasia and severe arthritis as a result of which she has been on anti-inflammatories for 5/6 years.
She's been being funny about eating the last couple of months so we ran some blood work as we knew her liver function was a bit off from routine blood work done about 4 months ago and her liver values have definately got quite a lot worse. The only thing that will stop the damage is stopping her pain meds which isn't an option - we're very much at the keep her comfortable and if that kills her liver/kidneys sooner rather than later thats what we deal with, I won't let her be in pain.
My vet is doing some reserach into the food she's on v whats available as a commercial liver friendly diet and we'll be having another conversation tomorrow but I was wondering what experience people on here have with diet / supplements for helping support liver function in dogs as much as is possible.
So far my vet has suggested starting her on milk thistle to help support things.
She's a bit complicated diet wise as she can't have lots of meat products (she does well on fish tho) and cna't have wheat or diary at all.

Hepatosyl is a good liver supplement.has ingredients similar to milk thistle plus a few extras.have had very good success with it and diet to manage chronic liver issues dogs.

Diet management is key in many cases but an absolute minefield .generally low animal protein high fat ,high plant protein diets are advised with supplements on some minerals and vits and not on others as for example needs low copper and vitamin a.

this is one of the few situations where I really do believe the prescription diets can help. You also need a diet with a protein from a non animal source as well(animal protein diets has been proven to have lower survival times versus plant protein diets)which can be challenging at home.

However the real key is trying to find a NSAID or other painkiller with less liver toxic effects.what drug is she on at the minute? there may be drugs with different pathways of action and excretion that could still provide her with good pain relief.

I'm very much in the camp of comfort and quality of life versus length of life as well btw...but it's worth examining options.

Drugs wise she's on codiene, paracetamol and metacam. We did recently try to switch her to cox 2 inhibitors which are supposed to be better for liver etc (thats why she was switched to them) but she couldn't tolerate them (bloody diaorrhea) so had to be switched back to the metacam after a month or so off it.
Unfortunately from talking with my vet yesterday the only place really to go if she stops tolerating the metacam (she iniitally reacted to it as well when she was switched back) is something called PLT which is a NSAID and steroid mix but is way more toxic which is why it's the last resort.
So would switching her to a tofu type base of diet be a good way to go?
