Liveries - are you allowed to lunge/loose school in the arena?

Heck yes, my owners can do whatever they like in the arena, ride naked in there if they wish to, I don't care :D

this ^^ I maintain the school, harrow and rake in track once a week. As long as they move up and down the school, or use alternate ends, its not a problem here.
They regularly loose school, and loose jump, again have no problem with it.
As long as they continue to use good old common sense, and do all they do in a controlled manner, I'm happy.

BUT i really hate it when they turn the horses out in there for a long period - I don't mind the 10 mins whilst they're mucking out to give horses a stretch (I even do that myself) but had to have words when someone turned horse out for half a day, and gave it a pile of hay, horse pooed everywhere and hay trampled into surface, owner didnt pick anything up - Not so happy YM then!

At my last yard we were allowed to lunge but not loose school or 'play'. It did do my head in because I dont see the difference between someone who is lunging around and around and around over the same area leaving pits every where to a horse having a bit of a trot or canter without being attached to a line. Drove me mad.

Last yard, no lunging in arenas as the surfaces were new and lunging is one of the quickest ways to dig up a membrane!
Not an issue though as they had a seperate lunge pen.

Current yard, lunging and free schooling allowed.

I don't allow my liveries to lunge or loose school in the arenas, but we have a 20m round pen to do so. Doing this is the arena recks the surface and when I did allow it I was having to level the surface nearly everyday...........never again!

We can in the outdoor but not the indoor as it damages the surface.

There has been talk of a lunge pen being built sometime next year.

I'm being a dummy here, but why exactly is loose schooling any worse than someone doing a lot of canter work etc? And lunging - provided its not in the same spot?

I used to loose school my boy, but only in walk and trot - very rarely did he go batty - unless something spooked him.

I used to get told to work on lots of circles and transitions by mu instructor, including for about 10 mins doing work on a figure of 8 and 10 mins circles in and out. Surely that would have the same/similar effect as lunging?

I get that if you have a yard a school is a very big expense, but if its a facility there for your liveries to use, why restrict them?

We're allowed to lunge as long as dont keep the horse on the same spot all the time.
We're not allowed to loose school simply because the fencing isn't tall enough :)

This - especially because the stallion and his mares are in the field next to the school in the winter - they're electric fenced about 10 feet back from the school fence but the potential for a horse to end up in there with them is just too great!

We're also not supposed to lunge if other people are riding as you can't avoid each other easily if there's a long rope involved. We normally wait if someone's lunging as it's never more than 20 minutes, but there's always one who wants to come in and lunge when others are already riding

My liveries can lunge and do whatever, as long as they are attached to their horse somehow, as the arena is not fenced, it's surrounded by banks on 3 sides and post and rail on the fourth, but the entrance is just a wide gap.

There are two, the larger and newer of the two is purely for flat work, no lunging.
The smaller is the dedicated 'lunging' school, as well as jumping, flat work and I presume free schooling, should you be inclined to.
Both are very well looked after and frequently harrowed.
