to lunge and loose school your horse in the arena?

I'm currently having a 60 x 40 arena built for the livery yard, but I'm wondering whether to have a 60ft round pen built for the liveries to lunge and loose school in, instead of doing it in the arena. Opinions please?!

if you have the space id put one in as its just an extra thing to have also it is annoying when your riding and people are lunging in the school !! but most people dont have one so i think its completely up to you

we are only allowed to lunge / loose school in the sand school not in the arena - i personally think on a big yard this is very sensible as i think in certain circamstances (sp) it could be chaos!

we used to lunge but it trashed the school ( in that there was a raised bit with a trench worn in) now they are building us a lunging pen. loose schooling was never allowed due to safety aspects

We are not allowed to lunge/loose school in our new arena, because the surface has to have six months to 'settle' apparently. I am sorry about this, because I like to do lots of ground work with my horse. But there.

I own a livery yard. I wont allow them to lunge, i used to. However somebody ripped the membrane, it also makes the surface become unstable, as the settled sand ect at the bottom, starts to become work in. I dont mind if they keep moving up/down menage, as doent do as much damage. But maybe im a meanie!

Yep, sure we are but if somebody was kind enough t provide us with a 60 ft round pen as an alternative, we'd happily use that instead I guess! lol

It's a fair bit more money of course to add a second schooling area, would it get enough use to justify te cost?

We run a yard and the answer is yes to both. If the surface is decent, it will stand up to lunging etc no problem so long as it's regularly graded. I'd choose to spend the extra money on the very best surface you can find

We are allowed to lunge, we cant loose school though as there are so many people coming and going in ours its not possible, As the riding school use it aswell so would be a safety issue.

We was told when our new menage is built we cant loose school or lunge as it has to settle.

We can lunge but not loose school as the fence is not high enough to be certain of no escapees.

However if I were you I'd go with a round pen as it sounds like you are putting in a gorgeous arena and all the arena contracters I know say lunging and loose schooling can ruin an arenas footing.

I know when they go silly on the lunge they do manage to get down to the membrane which never happens when they're ridden.

We are allowed to lunge in the school but not loose school for safety reasons. If you can manage it an extra pen would be really useful, esp in the winter eves when everyone wants to get in the school. I wouldn't be happy if there wasn't anywhere to lunge.

We can loose school/lunge in the indoor school but not in the arena outdoors. I think having a lunging pen is a great idea

Yes to lungeing but no to loose schooling.
When we lunge we tend to move the horse around a bit so one particluar circle doesn't become very worn.
We have a 60x40 arena and theres plenty of space for one person to lunge whilst others ride.
I don't think a lungeing pen would get enough use at our yard.
Also our surface is fab, which i think helps!!!

We used to lunge in our school but the YO used to moan about the mess we were making. When she sold a horse she then had a lunge ring made which we generally use.

We're lucky enough to have a seocnd outdoor dressage arena which has high fencing around it, and, provided that noone wishes to ride in it at the same time, we can loose school in it. Its fantastic for loose jumping, a high wall runs along one side, and being able to school in there when you don't quite have the energy to ride is a life saver.

It won't cost too much extra, I'll just get the men to level a bit of ground and then get some extra surface.

I'm having silica sand and SpringTek rubber for the arena. Its the same as Radway Riding School's, if anyone knows it, where Henry Boswell trains, etc.

We can lunge and loose school - but most people are really decent and will only loose school when the school isnt in use i.e 7am !! lol - I have noticed that some posts on here dont even allow lunging in their schools!!! Crazy I say!!

xx

Not allowed to do either in the main arena. We have a little lunge pen although it could do with some more sand on it.
Lunging does tend to mess up the arena and leave big holes which is a pain when you then want to ride.

I think Captain would let me build sand castles in the school if I wanted to lol. My mare loose jumps 1m25 which is higher than the fence and she's never jumped out. I'd love a lunging pen though because then I'd never lunge just loose school them in there.

With it being an indoor we can both lunge and loose school, well my idea of loose schooling is loosing the horse and sitting on the chair in the school to watch her antics lol!
Maybe because I am not very experienced I do find it difficult to share me riding with someone else lunging ... thankfully there is only one person who lunges on our yard though.

We are allowed to lunge AND to loose school... but you can only loose school if no one else wants to use the arena. We are a fairly friendly bunch and there is only one person who gets 'funny' about catching her horse and stopping loose schooling if you want to use the school. She seems to think because she has a youngster, she should have special privaleges. (there is always one ins't there LOL). I like having the freedom to loose school becuase if I've been jumping I like to let my pony wander loose around the arena while I put the jumps away.

We have an indoor and and outdoor and you can loose school in both, although most people only use the indoor. I would love a lunging pen though if it were an option.

Am I being dim, what is the difference between lunging in a controlled manner & riding/jumping on the surface? I understand that if you stay on the circle & dont move then perhaps you would cause a trench, but then surely you just rake over. I have seen bigger rutts from jumping then lunging. I would have thought a school that can only be ridden on would be a waste of money. For one thing youngsters are started with long reining & lunge work so that would rule them out for using the school. I am just so shocked to read that so many people are unable to lunge in the school.

We can lunge, loose school and turn out in winter in our school. The surface stands up well.

I never lunge on a consistent circle so would hate a lunge pen and for me they are too small for a youngster. I lunge using the whole school, hence I book it as if I were riding. I do a fair amount of ground work as I really enjoy it, switching from lunging to long reining as I go.

Cairo is normally loose schooled - he works as well without a line as he does on one. Again he is not worked on a small circle due to his joints having old age problems.

At the last yard loose schooling was banned due to idiots galloping their horses round - that is not loose schooling - loose schooling to me is the horse behaving as if on a line - nice steady paces and obedient. I also loose school my two at the same time - they follow in tandum - I love playing at "circus" - Cairo changes the rein on the command "change".

Yes to both in both arenas but it would be great if there was a specialist lunging pen because it's a pain when there are 3 of you riding in the indoor in winter and somebody comes in and takes up half of it to lunge their horse!!!

My YO has been really good about me lunging my lad in the school, but has said she would prefer it if I didn't. He tanks off and cos he's a big lad he does dig the surface up. A purpose built lunging pen would be fantastic!
