Well my horse was supposed to have his first treatment for a flat sarcoid on his chest last night. Vet came and applied the cream, within 30 minutes later he’d managed to accidently rub it off on his stable door! So advised to wash it off with gloves and soapy water and we are going to have to reschedule when my livery yard allows 24/7 turnout at the start of June. It’s not ideal but he can have his own field whilst having the treatment as he tends to be playful with the other horses and I don’t want him to get any cream on them – planning on having the treatment late in the evening or very early morning.

Just wondered if any one had any experiences to share with regards to a flat sarcoid in the chest region? How quickly the cream takes to work – what the wound will look like and how long to heal? Read lots of posts with mixed views on riding, but will monitor how he goes to see if he’s in any discomfort.

Also does the cream sink in to the area, did any of you cover this over at all e.g. a rug – want to have him in a fly rug as he does react to bites.

Thanks :)

Hi am really interested in replies you get as our new mare we think has a sarcoid on her thigh and we are thinking of going down the liverpool cream avenue but we have been advised by our vet as its fine at the moment to possibly wait till autumn as he did say with liverpool cream can leave quite a big wound when sarcoid drops off and because of risks of flies etc would be better to leave it. Good luck with it.

Hi, yes keep watching, I've also posted in Veterinary. His sarcoid seems a to fit the description of an occult one so i'm interest what the cream will do and what wound I'll end up with.

Yes flies are a concern for me - which is why I wondered about whether the cream absorbs. I only have until the start of September to sort it and not sure on what the weather will be like, thought better to get it done asap early summer than risk a hot and sticky September.

My friend's horse had that last autumn as he had really bad sarcoids which she nearly didn't buy him because of. He couldn't wear a rug during the treatment as it would have rubbed the cream off but he wasn't clipped so it wasn't a problem. However he wears a fly rug now to prevent the sarcoid virus spreading (or something like that).
He had to stay in for the duration because one of the sarcoids was on his belly and the ground was muddy and would have washed the cream off.
It made him really itchy and he kept rubbing the cream on us too. He was quite miserable during the treatment as he couldn't be ridden due to the location of one of the sarcoids on his head (so no bridle or even lunge cavesson) and was sore and itchy) but it was only three weeks and they have dropped off beautifully now so she is really pleased with the result. Definitely worth doing!
Good luck with yours.

Be really careful with the cream, don't let it touch you or any other horse, it's really nasty stuff!

On the plus side it works a treat!

Hiya,

My boy had a sarcoid in the middle of his chest and one on his neck. I had the vet apply the liverpool cream, have to mention that this is going back 3 years now my so memory is not great!!

He stayed in his stable so he couldn't get to any of the other horses, I wasn't allowed to touch it at all!! I put a rope across his door as opposed to closing the door so he couldn't rub the cream off. I can't remember now if he had to have a couple of sessions with it... I'm pretty sure he did!!

Sure enough though, it worked an absolute treat!!

The result now is that, although no hair has grown back where the saircoid was, the sarcoid itself hasn't come back, and this is 3 years down the line. It doesn't look too bad there being no hair there as it was only small (probs half an inch in diameter).

I'm sooooo chuffed it worked! HOWEVER... The mistake I made was that I claimed for the treatment on my insurance. I think it only came to about £250. The problem I have now is that should he ever have any skin problems/sarcoids again, they won't pay out!! So I wish I hadn't claimed for such a small amount just in case in the future something more scary comes along!! Fingers crossed though he'll be fine!!

Hope that helps some!! :)

Hi all,
My boy had a large flat sarcoid on hisface next to his lip about the size of a 50p. Vet came applied Liverpool cream and I made a make shift horsey plaster out of skintac dressing and a section of skicky hoof bandage (cant think of the make but they are very sticky on 1 side for polticing hoofs) Anyway the plaster stayed on long enough for the cream to take effect and for it not to end up on his hay when eating.

This was 3 yrs ago,my boy never fussed at the application and had no after effects, the cream started working within days and the sarcoid dried up fully and has never come back.

Good luck wth your treatment hope it all goes well.

Teresa

I have experienced one on the chest. It appeared when horse was about 2 and the vet said leave well alone unless it gets bigger. Last year (at age 6) it got bigger at the beginning of the year and after being advised to try homeopathic remedies (which made it worse) went down the Liverpool cream route.
First pic in May 2010 after the first lot of treatment:

This fell off (can't remember exactly when) but there was still bulbs of sarcoid left on the edge of the treatment so the treatment was repeated (using the cream that was originally prescribed by Dr Knottenbelt) and this is what happened (June 2010):

Poor horse - felt so sorry for him but he was an angel throughout. Always allowed the treatment to be done even though he knew what was coming! (July 2010)

And then in August looking so much better.

After the second treatment all of it was gone - have not taken any photos since but all you can see now is a splash of pink skin under the white hair. He was given Danilon throughout as and when needed. I kept a good fly rug on him all summer, and sometimes he was in during the day when sun was hot and flies were bad. Good luck with your treatment, if you have any other questions please ask.

Thanks for this - the rope idea is good, however my monkey would be out in seconds, he's far to playful and also loves chewing rope. Interesting about no hair regrowth - I have to have 5 x vet visits for the application of the cream, the cream itself is £200 so looking around £500 ish. As i'm on a livery yard, my only real choice is to have a separate paddock with electric fencing for him whilst his treatment is ongoing and the cream is present.

(reply below posted in veterinary as well)

My boy had a raised sarcoid under his chest / belly about 3inches behind the girth 3 years ago. He had the liverpool cream and the vet warned me that he would probably get a large open wound, and need bute as it could be very painful.

It turned out that he was never bothered by it in the slightest! He was treated in April time and so didn't need a rug as it wouldn't of been possible to wear one. He also went out in the field with 3 other horses, we only decided to do this because he is a bit of a 'billy no mates' and the field boss! He was in a stable at night bedded on straw.

He never rubbed the cream off once, and although we gave him bute and a few days off for the first application the vet felt it was unnecessary for the further applications. Of course we didn't do anything too strenuous or go to any shows.

He was to have 3 applications of the cream but ended up having 5 (over about 3 weeks) and it wasn't having any effect! The sarcoid just shrunk in size slowly and he never had an open wound or sore of any sort, I think it took about 3 months in total for the sarcoid to disappear and now he is just left with a flat hairless piece of skin about 1cm across. Touch wood he hasn't developed any more.

I really hope that helps and good luck :)

(BorgRae - it doesn't matter if you claim on your insurance or not, sarcoids would still be excluded. Your insurance will say that you must notify them of all incidents whether you intend claim or not, as they do check with your vets if the problem is something your horse has suffered with in the past. But haven't lost out by claiming.)

Thanks for this - mine is the same billy no mates and bottom of the pile but he does like to try and get the other horse to play with him so to be on the safe side for them i'm requesting a separate paddock. That does help thanks :)
