I was at a show on Sunday and i saw a cob being ridden in one of these. The reins were on the very lowest hole/point of the bit only.

Now i am not a "all horses must be in snaffles" type and would rather see a horse bitted appropriately with light hands and brakes which work rather than using a snaffle and halling on its mouth as you have no brakes. I myself use a cheltenham gag for XC/hunting, although snaffle for everything else.

I have never come across this bit before, not done any driving, i had to look it up online to find out its name. What action would this have and what would prompt you to use a bit which looks to have a severe action?

Thanks

I drove my shire in a mullen mouth liverpool with the reins on the first slot, i also ride him in it, usualy on the ring, or first slot, i ride him in it, because it is the bit he is used to, and he goes well in it. The action on these, rings is'nt severe!
I personly would never use it on the lowest slot, not for riding, but thats just me, someone more knowledgable may tell you different.

I have used one driving Shires but have only used the smooth side not the ridged side. I've never heard of them being used for riding only driving.

i ride in my liverpool bit on the few rare occations that i get on but as she is voice responsive so hardly any pressure needs to be applied.
mind you on saying that she is also driven in an open bridle so for her its one bridle/bit for everything.

Fii: Where did you get your driving harness and blinkered bridle?

I bought it from a very nice lady who shows the Ringwood brewery shires, the bridle is Canadian, as the bridle that came with the harness was too small.
If you PM me i will give you her name and address, ( if i can find it.):)

I ride my pony in one, and also drive him in it.

He is very strong and its the only bit i can hold him in. My liverpool only has 1 slot, my friend shortened it years ago as the pc didn't really approve.

I ride my large donkey in one of these, on the ring, so the mildest setting. It's not uncommon. I do it because I have not got another type of bit for her yet.

I knew someone who rode her little New forest pony in one. Never figured out why. I rode him several times, cantered out hacking etc and he went fine in an eggbutt snaffle with no noseband, and I am quite little and would not class myself as a strong or experienced rider.

They are not strong bits, they can be as mild as an eggbutt or any other bit.
