My TB has developed 2 verrucous and 1 nodular sarcoids, all small at the moment but are growing albeit slowly. Had my vet out who took pics and sent them off to Liverpool. Liverpool came back to us yesterday recommending 2 types of cream that will administered by my vet 4 times in a row, every other day. It looks like the treatment will start next week. I feel really quite bad about it! It is definitely necessary as one of the sarcoids will be rubbed by girth if it grows more. I am obviously worried about how he will react to the treatment. I am really concerned about the little one on his chest as I think once this starts to have cream on, he won't be able to wear a rug. It's been down to 3 and 4C the last two nights!
Some good vibes and any advice from those of you who have been through this would be very gratefully received!! Ooh and please let me know if you are feeding any immune system building supplements or anything else that seems to be helping for that matter!
Thank you xx

My horse has just had his third visit yesterday from the vet putting on his Liverpool Cream, he is due to have his fourth and final treatment tomorrow morning. He has a small flattish one on his eye lid and a nobbly one on his flank. They are only putting the Liverpool Cream on the one on his flank and have given me some other cream for his eye (which after just under a week looks like its nearly gone)

Up to now he is just slightly uncomfortable. On the day he has his cream on I leave him in the stable, as I found his fly rug was touching his cream and I didn't want it to get rubbed off, so he stays in with a nice bed, plenty of haylage and his tail plaited to stop him 'swishing' his tail and hitting the cream.

Leahurst have left me some bute to give him one twice a day to keep him comfortable.

Good luck to your horse, with his treatment

I had one of mine treated with the cream it worked great with no reactions it took quite a few weeks till it all healed up enough to ride out. Some people have bad experiences with the cream but i have to say mine were all positive and it was over 6 years ago and i have never seen a sarcoid since. I believe it is all heavy metal type stuff that is in it and has to be administered with care so dont get any on yourself by mistake but the vet has to do it anyway. Bute is enough NSAID to keep your horse comfortable when it is applied. All in all i was very happy with the treatment and that was over 6 years now and if memory serves me well mine had about 4 or 5 quite big sarcoids in various locations. My experience with sarcoids is that most other treatments tend to work for a while and then they come back but as i say that is over 6 years now and nothing has re-appeared. No doubt some will have bad experiences but you have to do what you think is best. Only trouble with the cream is the cost hope you have insurance and get them all treated within the year if you have.

My boy had his first treatment on Feb. Administered by a vet. He was given bute to help him cope with any pain. His was a flat sarcoid on the chest - like you photos were taken and sent to Liverpool and the cream was sent out in two pots one was 100% the second 75%. I kept a fly rug on him and kept him in during the day just to be sure. The scab was pretty big as it developed and eventually came off. Unfortunately there were still blobs of sarcoid on the outer ring and it was decided to re-apply. The second application was the 75% cream only.
The vet doing the same - every 24 hours for three days and then 48 hrs the fourth application (I think). Anyway it was very sore. Poor chap. I wanted to cry for him. Chest was swollen so he had 'man boobs' and it was obviously uncomfortable to walk even. He felt quite sorry for himself. Left him out so he could walk it off. Obviously given bute every day.
Thankfully now it seems to be over. The scab, which hung on like a loose button for ages, dropped off at the beginning of August and it is now healthy and pink underneath. I applied Sudocreme to the area around the sarcoid before it dropped off and also afterwards. But obviously very wary of putting anything on that would encourage re-growth (like aloe vera). If you read other posts on here regarding sarcoids you will find these things out - please read them there are some very interesting tips which I can't remember off the top of my head. The opinion was, however, not to give things that would boost the immune system as this only seems to make things worse. I remember thinking it was strange at the time (that's why I remember it). I had been feeding Citricidal (which is a grapefruit extract) liquid to boost the immune system and I stopped feeding it.
Also you do need to be very careful with the cream on your rugs and not to get it on you. It is nasty stuff which is why a vet has to administer it - and with gloves on!
Best of luck

My mare's got them in her armpit, and a couple up on the inside of her hind legs and one on her udder. She had her last application last week, and she's coped really well. She got sore after the 4th application (out of 5) so I gave her a bute for a couple of days and she's been fine since. She lives out and I just kept her in for the day after she had the cream on each time and then turned her out.

Good luck, hopefully he'll be fine.

Thank you all, so interesting and re-assuring to hear your stories. I think we'll be starting treatment next tuesday, then alternate days. I do feel terrible to put him through it - I bought him on Feb 10 as a complete hatrack - he'd last raced in Sept 09 and then been turned out and really think he wasn't far off his last legs when I got him. I really must learn how to put photos on here! He has been one of the most lovely trainable horses I have met and he is looking wonderful. But if I want to continue his career as a riding horse he needs to have the treatment. I will let you know how w're getting on, thanks again K xx

Hows it going? we started our treatment onTuesday.

Hi, so far so good! Charlie had cream applied Mon, Wed and Fri and was very good with the vet. On Wed I think he managed to wipe a lot of the cream off with his nose, consequently getting bleached patches in both nostrils, poor boy. So on Friday, I left him tied up short for 40 mins after treatment with a haynet to distract him. He was definitely more sore after third application so he has had Danilon (bute but more palatable) Fri eve, Sat and today. Final booked treatment is tomorrow - I am concerned that the one near his girth seems to have been affected least by the cream but I'll wait and see what my vet says.
Hope did your horse get on? Where are his sarcoids? Wishing you and your horse all the best. x

See my current post on Journey to Liverpool to get an idea of what it looks like when the treatment goes wrong and they demand £750 to put ot right.
Good luck as the other two on the horses sheath were cured.
