Ok so i moved to LWP about a month ago. At first i used them with my existing shavings. Now i dont know if i have put enough down too start with because after 2/3 days the beds are squelching (sp?) underfoot i guess this must be from the wet? So after 3/4 days i dig out most of the wet and out afew bales in.
Now i know that people on here only take wet out once a week and replace it with one bale? How? I must being doing something wrong, or maybe have the wettest horses ever??!!

Tell me how you manage yours? I wont be changing off it as, i get too deep litter, and it saves me loads of time!

Ours at home would not work with only putting 1 bag in. Generally for a half bed we use 2 bags every 3 days. For a 1/4 bed its 1 bag every other day, roughly.
I have no idea how others get away with using so little- maybe their horses arent in very long? Ours are in roughly 19 hours, some longer than that. They get regularly skipped out throughout the day and have the wettest areas taken out in the morning muck out
 
I dont know how people get away with using a bag a week either. Unless there small ponies that are clean & out more than in.
Mine are out from 8am till 4:30 -5pm most days. I have to put down at least 2 bags a week in each stable for the clean horses. Messy horse needs 3 bags a week usually. The wet is taken out everyday.
 
Ive planned for 2 bags a week for my ID who is out by day and very active whilst in at night. Im semi deep littering in that I take out the wet patch every two or three days. He does always pee in the same spot though so that makes things easier.

I cant understand how people manage to put only one bag of ANY bedding in a week unless they have tiny ponies!
 
Over a fortnight period I put one bag in at the end of the first week, and two at the end of the second. During the first week I also put half a bag of shavings on top.


I started off mixing in the wet like Aquamax but it got too pongy (amonia), since Christmas I have just left the pee alone and had a dig out on a Saturday which is working loads better.

To keep dust down and smell I have a watering can of Tesco Value diluted pine disifectant (30p a bottle) and I just splash that round over the pee bit and any exposed pellett bit when the shavings get thin.

This system is working really well for me; I love them!
 
Use Aquamax rather than LWP but the principle is about the same.

I have a very dirty, messy horse on box rest and I put down a bag every 2 days so 3 1/2 per week.
On shavings I was using 4 bags of Hunters a week and the bed was squelchy so although I use much more than they recommend it still works out cheaper and better for me.

Are there still shavings in the bed - it wont absorb as much if there are.

I suspect the people who use 1 bag a week are the same people who use 1 bag with shavings or 1 bale of straw.

BTW I am about to change to Brites wood pellets, even if they don't go as far as the Aquamax they are less than half the price so I can afford to use more.
 
I'm on Aquamax, same difference as said above. I reckon I do about 3 bags a fortnight. I was doing 3 bales of shavings a week, so this is much better.

I remove the poohs and take out the wet patches every day, often he wees in just one spot. I don't leave in the wee, I think thats horrible, just a few wet bits that I don't get up on the shovel, so only a tiny bit. I scrape back the dry stuff with the shovel to reveal the dark coloured wet bits and then take out all of that. Then I re-lay/level the bed. Total process takes about 10 minutes from start to finish and I'm not a quick mucker outer. The amount of poo and wet stuff taken out is about half a wheelbarrow. 2/3 bed about 5 inches deep in 12 x 12 stable with no rubber mats. Large messy pony in about 16 hours a day.

I think if youre squelching then you have problems. I would start by scraping back and removing all the wet stuff you can find, then just adding in dry pellets and mixing well to get your bed back on course.
 
If you want a cheap efficient bedding then I'd recommend Nedz Bed Advance over any of the wood pellets. Nedz Advance is compressed straw pellets so straight away more absorbent than wood pellets (straw is more absorbent than wood). You don't have to wet it (that must be a real faff!) and I use one bag every ten days, so works out much cheaper than Liverpool Wood pellets. It's amazing stuff - can't believe people use anything else!

Makes mucking out a 5 minute painless job.

I pay about £6.50 a bag - at face value this looks expensive compared to Liverpool Wood pellets, but the LWPs come in 10kg bags and the Nedz Advance in 15kg bags... so they work out about the same price.

the 15kg bags work out about 3.25 a bag so not really x
