Liverpool Wood Pellets - Anyone used them?

Hi,

Wondered if anyone has used the above?. Currently all our horses are on shavings and we are finding it not only difficult to get them, but really expensive when you have 4 horses.

Want to know if people think these wood pellets are easy to use, absorbent, goods and bads?

One girl at our yard is using a product called 'Nature's Best' and we think the Liverpool ones may be similar but cheaper, and since she has just started using them she has not really decided yet if they are any good.

All comments/help appreciated.

I'm using them at the moment and quite like them:) they come in 10 kg bags that when you have a look at you think - it's not going to cover anything is it and then you get a surprise as they swell up into lovely bed. They are £2,45 per bag delivered and you need to use 1,5 bag as an equivalent of a bag of shavings, which still comes out loads cheaper... They are great with the deliveries as well, I ordered on-line on Tuesday night and they were delivered on Thursday morning.
 
Am interested in this as at present using Aquamax (now gone up to £7 per 13kg bag). Anyone know if the liverpool wood pellets are very different from Aquamax/Nature's best?
 
Hi, The name makes me think these are very like woody pet? We discovered these and found that they were brill for the gelding as he, like most gelings wee in the middle of his bed. We would put them down in the pee area under his straw and it stopped the the pee spreading, you take the straw back, and mix it up a bit and spread out again, when it can take no more change it. it absorbs 5 times its weight i think. The other thing is, sometimes when you muck out it can be reall smelly from stale urine, sprinkle these over the area and they totally absorb the smell!! hope that helps, it really saved on our straw usage, so less storage used.

Understand when you first lay bed you then sprinkle with water. What about mucking out, do you have to soak new pellets before you lay them again?

I'm using them on deep litter with mats and find them great. I've only just started using them but they are very absorbent, it doesn't smell and i'm not using very much. I just have a small area at th back and the rest of the stable is matted, seems to work very well.

I didn't soak them before putting them in, just put them underneath the existing bedding and they take moisture from out of the bed.
 
I'm on natures best having previously been on aquamax.
To start a bed I get the watering can out, put the pellets down and give a really good soak. Then after 30mins when it's all expanded (it takes more water than you expect) I'll sprinkle another bag over the top.

I deep litter mine in a full size stable & think it makes a really solid base. I make banks from shavings (about 2 bales per 3-4wks) and then I pull the banks down, leave the shavings ontop & lay new banks. I find that without the mixture of shavings
1) you cant make proper banks
2) it's too absorbant & the poo falls to pieces making it really hard to muck out.

I put in between 1 and 2 bags (13kg) per week
 
Currently using Aquamax and would be interested in anyone who knows if the Liverpool ones are as good.
I bought a stash before the prices went up but would consider alternative suppliers.

I found the special fork makes it much easier to muck out than a normal shavings fork, you can sift out all those little poos. It's brilliant at separating hay out of the bed too.

im currently using aquamax and have just ordered the liverpool wood pellets as from what i can see on the website they look very similar but half the price. The bags are slightly smaller at 10kg but still works out cheaper. Ive got 3 on it ,two of which have a half bed and my mare has a full bed as with a half bed she is to posh to pee in it! The gelding is a filthy git and gets through 2 bags a week .Ive also got a tine fork and find that the poo still drops through it.My only gripe is that it does take the moisture out of the poo making it all fall to bits but it's brilliant for absorbency
