Livery - And inexperienced owners

I just think that there are owner's responsibilities; for example, if your horse is severely unwell and needs possibly to be euthanased I believe that the decision to say yea or no is ultimately the owner's responsibility. I'd rather make that decision from a position of knowledge.

What happens if the horse is not getting what it requires in livery in terms of nutrition, turnout, basic handling etc? If the owner has some level of experience they may be in a position to spot any problems and intervene. If not it is up to the yard and the yard may not be meeting these requirements.

Yes, I agree putting a horse on full livery is better than DIY for a totally inexperienced owner. However, I would like to see some level of experience before purchasing a horse.

I don't think horse management is rocket science but if done well it does require a lot of knowledge and at least some experience.

I wonder if they can afford to be on Full Livery, sour grapes me thinks

Yeah i cant afford to be on full livery, at my tender age of 18, affording two horses all by myself is already a bit of a struggle and takes the majority of my salary. I start work at 8.30am each morning and am sometimes not home until after 6.30pm but even if i did have the money to afford to have them on full livery i wouldnt. I enjoy my routine of being at the stables until i cant see my hand in front of my face, its that dark! And i love the lack of enthusiasm and motivation to poo pick the fields and muck out the stables. Its all part of owning a horse. But its people like you that give people on full livery a bad name, i know people on full livery and they are lovely and spend alot of time with their horses but they DONT make pathetic, small minded comments about how people on DIY cannot afford to be on full livery.

I have just read my posts back and I think I should clarify a few things...

1) I do think people should share or loan a horse first to get an understanding of the cost/ commitment
2) I don't think that it is acceptable for people to buy a horse and just dump it on someone without caring - it think this applies to DIY as much as Full
3) Most normal people, like me & a few others who have bought a horse a little later in life, do do their best to read & understand as much about horse care as they can and tend to be willing to listen to advice.
4) there isn't any need to critisise someone on how they stable their horse.

There, no need to shoot me down in flames!

Where was I trying to shoot you down in flames?? I haven't replied to any of your posts!!

[/ QUOTE ]And I have lots of friends on DIY. I wasn't looking to be offensive to people on DIY, its just that there are some who constantly make snide comments about people on full livery and sometimes I wonder if, for those individuals, it might be that they want it and are jealous - otherwise why would they put so much energy into criticising full livery?! I have been on DIY myself and I think we should each do our own things without bitching about each other. I just get tired of being lectured to about not doing my horse justice because I'm on full livery.

I apologise if I offended you.

We have several novice owners at the moment most of whom are ladies in their middle years. Their ponies are on working livery which I think is ideal. We teach them on their own ponies, they handle the ponies when staff are around and are able to assist them, they are really keen and turn up early to help catch in not just their own horse but other RS ponies as well and they are learning fast.

What shocks me is that people would want to own a horse on full livery and NOT have the desire to learn at least the principles of basic horse management. These ladies are looking forward to their horses coming in so they can come up some mornings and learn to muck out! Even though their horse is on the school, they still want to be involved and learn what needs to be done.

The one full livery that we own also regularly comes up in winter to muck her own horse out as she knows how manic it gets when there around 50+ ponies living in and she wants to help.

I just find it wierd that people would not want to learn to take care of their horse in principle AT ANY AGE, regardless of whether they have time to do care for it 24/7 and thus keep it on full livery.

You state that you wonder if some people might be jealous, that comment is very snooty. You can turn this around, obviously by your reply you are very offended could this be because you're lazy and don't like the dirty bit.

Each to their own I say

Yes I am a bit, and no I don't

Shock horror eh? And yet my horse is very well cared for, happy, healthy and we have a lovely bond!

What about calling a truce? People with limited time on Full Livery contracts are fine and people with more time to spare on DIY Livery contracts are also fine. Like I said before, calm down people, remember, it's not a competition. As long as your horse is looked after properly it doesn't care if it is you or the yard staff doing it.

And whilst I'm on the subject. I hear an awful lot on this forum about all these terrible novice owners but I haven't ever actually met one myself in 30 plus years of horse ownership/sharing/riding. Maybe I am just lucky but the horse owners that I know are either experienced in horse management (even if it is their first horse) because they have previously shared or worked in a yard etc. or are willing to seek advice if they are not sure.

Sorry Mickey! Wasn't directed at you! I just re-read my post & thought I should clarify a few things so I didn't get yelled at in general!

I actually don't mind what livery people are on

as I said each to their own. The only thing that should matter is the safety & wellbeing of the horse.

I don't like to see totally and utterly inexperienced owners buying a horse and sticking it on full livery

Having a horse on full livery and picking up things as you go along from your yard manager is as good a way as any to learn. Your horse is in professional care while you figure out the basics. What's wrong with that ???

Believe it or not, some of us who do DIY are not "jealous" and actually choose it because - as I have made quite clear - we enjoy it, that is our personal choice. I couldn't give a stuff what livery people are on if their horses are properly cared for. But I will tell you something; I earn considerably more than the "average" wage and comfortably could put my three on full livery. I had to for a short while last year following a nasty accident, and I hated it. I choose DIY mostly because I enjoy the whole package, but partly because I have the whole yard to myself bar the YO. Thus avoiding snobbish, narrow minded and childish people who think everybody else is a pauper for not doing full livery. If I was struggling to keep my horses in hay I'd be even more offended by childish comments like "are you one of the people I'm talking about?" I'm sorry, but in a word - grow up.
