Hi

I am looking at relocating my horse from Stroud to Cheltenham where I live but I don't know where many of the yards are so if anyone could help that would be great!

I am looking for DIY livery with a school and ok hacking, preferably Glos side of Cheltenham like Shurdington, Leckhampton, Birdlip possibly even out to Witcombe etc as I work in Stroud so need to be able to get there on my way to work.

I have heard of Church Lane Farm in Shurdington but can anyone tell me what the hacking is like around there?? Does anyone know what the yard is like? I also looked at Ullenwood Court - does anyone have any knowledge of this yard??

Really feeling stressed about finding the right yard for my mare so any helo would be really appreciated!

No idea if this is too far but I recently moved to Richard Chapman Equestrian in Longney.
110 a month gets u stable, all year turnout, indoor and outdoor schools, jumping paddock, huge XC course, 400 acres to ride on and adlib hay and straw. Its fab!!

Ullenwood's school isn't all that... and they operate as a riding school too so you may find you don't get much use of the school in the evening? I know of a private yard on A38, near to Coombe Hill that are looking for liveries, well equipped floodlit school, reasonable access to hacking, lovely yard. PM me your number and I'll pass it on to the girl who's got a horse there, she can tell you all about it?

I had a look a Church Farm when I was looking, the yard is lovely, nice boxes good out door school and small indoor school (plenty big enough for lunging and schooling IMO) when I asked about hacking, you have to go across the main road :( so you can get too good hacking but you have to ride a very busy main road, turnout is lovely, split into mare’s and geldings and summer and winter fields, very secure tack room, they make their own hay on site too.

Sadly I was told that the only things she will not accept are crib bitters and windsuckers as the other horses will copy, I didn’t have the heart to explain to her why this is an utterly ridiculous outdated idea!

There’s a yard at Badgeworth too although not sure what it’s like.

What ever you do avoid Noverton Farm like the plague! Full of kids, poor up keep, the winter field was easily a foot of mud when I went to look and they were leaving round bales of hay too close to the gate so you’d have to walk your horse though a herd of eating horses to get out, not to mention they’ve had strangles several times. Shame as it has 200 acres of off road on site hacking and access direct to Cleeve Hill. I was offered the choice of three stables, one was in the American barn, but it had crappy wooden dividers along the top and a rather narrow alleyway, one stable was outside, facing a wall and with no light (natural or artificial) and the final stable (that was only £20 a week) was…. A SHED WITH A STABLE DOOR!

yes price includes all hay and straw - its good quality, there are no limits on how much you use.
Stables all have automatic drinkers too, Richard is very nice and knows everyone by name.
It is quite big but spread out and you tend to see different people each time you go up at first! But everyone has been lovely to me, very helpful and there is a lovely atmosphere.
It is very relaxed and no rules on things like farriers/vets/instructers you use. You are left to your own devices but richard is always about if you need him. Im pretty sure there is a spare stable or 2 atm but not 100%. Im so glad I picked the yard, and its the best value for money iv ever found!

Badgeworth: They have an all-weather outdoor arena, which has mud underneath one half, and concrete under the other - it is fine for general riding, yet have to be careful with jumping at height, as the concrete underneath can cause strain on the horses' legs on landing. Also have to be careful on the lunge as a few horses in the past have slipped. The grazing in the winter is very wet and boggy, not much grass due to the ground being churned up. However the hacking is fairly good if you do not mind going through heavy traffic to get there. They are taking on geldings only now. Horses and ponies are in at night during winter. There is a veterinary clinic on site of which is VERY handy. Is a fab yard depending on you and your horses wants and needs. Thanks.

I beg to differ - Badgeworth is an appalling yard full stop! The fencing is all rusty barbed wire, there are far far too many horses in too small a field, they have just sold off the 'winter' field for development (500 houses) and the hacking is absolutely dismal. Yes, if you spend an hour getting to the hill the hacking is great, but riding along the main shurdington road is not my idea of fun! The owners just dont care anymore, the school is useless and the indoor school now houses caravans. It is not horse friendly at all!! Not usually so negative but the place is awful!

Richard Chapmans is in the wrong direction from Chelt, lovely yard though just wrong location if you want chelt.

Church farm is nice aswell and the people I have met up there are actually nice  you never come across that at livery yards :p

There is one in Witcombe aswell I used to keep my horses there nice yard only down side is that all the geldings get turned out toether so when we was up ther eI had to go and get my 12hh pony in a field full of 16.2s! Not the best set up but a nice yard, indoor and outdoor school jump field and miles and miles of private hacking without going on a single road

I was at a yard in Deerhurst. Nothing special but had a small indoor school and the stables were ok, it was cheap and cheerful but the YO was lovely, very friendly and helpful. Some of the other liveries were incredibly selfish and inconsiderate though and when I was there unfortunately there were too many horses for the grazing available which is why I moved my horses away. But it might be worth checking out if things have improved, that was about a year ago.
