Livery clients/ YO's : are outside instructors allowed on your yard?

We are not allowed to use outside instructors on the yard I'm at - this hasn't bothered me till now as I box my horses somewhere else for lessons. However my friend is probably going to have one of my horses on loan and I want to help her with him. She will not be paying me as such (maybe a few beers

). Not sure whether to clear this with YO first, or just crack on. Also if YO says this is a no goer not sure what to do.

Is it normal practice that if YO is a trainer no other instructos are allowed on the yard?

Our yard has the same policy as yours, but mainly because its a RS/Livery yard so we allready have 4 instructors and I kind of think it's fair enough

At my last yard you could have external instructors but you had to pay £15

Was that to book exclusive use of the school?

At my old yard (which I was on Full Livery) we were only allowed to have the YO granddaughter as an instructor, no outside instructors were allowed. It was one of the reasons I moved my horse to Mum and Dad’s.

I don’t think this is normal practice though, well i didn’t think so.

My yard lets particular instructors in, well the YO who teaches herself actually organises for other instructors to come to the yard and they usually teach for about 4/5 hours depending on number of people who want lessons. It works really well and we get a mixture of dressage and showjumping instructors.

I only know of 1 yard near me that stops you having outside instructors, but they are known for a variety of strange rules.

I think that if the instructor is safe and not interferring with anyone else, you should be able to have who the hell you like.

I used to keep Axey on an event yard and one of the rules there was no outside instructors, which is fine if you do jumping as YO was a top event rider, but I only do dressage and her idea of schooling for dressage was 'put draw reins on him' so I struggled for over a year before moving to a yard where my old instructor could come and teach me. The best thing I ever did.

No outside are allowed if ok'd by yo..
and often outside trainers introduced by YO although most liveries are taught by yo anyway

i allow 'outside trainers on my yard, should anyone want that, we have a great guy that comes in once every two weeks and does a jumping clinic, i like all my horses to jump even if they are dressage horses.
As for other dressage trainers , its ok by me have no problem with it at all. I just ask my clients to make sure if they do that they put it in the diary if they require the school to themselves and to let me know so it does'nt clash with my teaching /riding.
I think some dont allow it because they maybe are'nt that secure in their teaching. For me i know that all information is useful so the more you get the better even if it is to find out why something does'nt work!

Actually the problem lies with Insurance. Unless the YO employs the Instructor they are not allowed to teach on the premises therefore leaving the YO liable. The alternative is for the Instructor to show full insurance & indemnify the YO. However what has & does happen is an Instructor shows a certificate of Insurance to the YO & then for whatever reason cancels or 'maybe' doesnt pay the premium & the insurance will lapse. Then of course it is the YO who is liable for any claims. I have been through this from every angle recently as I am just about ready to open a brand new commercial yard. So on that basis perhaps we shouldnt be too hard on a YO. In this day of litigation you can not afford the risk. At the end of the day they are protecting not only themselves but YOU
Hope that helps.

My old yard was a riding school so didn't allow outside instructors. However, they had a couple of excellent instructors as well as arranging clinics etc so it was never a problem. At the yard I'm at now we can have who we like.

We are, but I choose to use the YO's daughter as an instructor. I have had another instructor come along. No extra charge or anything.

I can't see that they would consider you as an instructor as you own the horse.

Yup insurance is given as the reason. I wasn't having a go at the YO as I knew the rules before going to the yard, was just curious if this was common practice. . As my friend wont be paying me the insurance issue shouldn't apply - still undecided whether to ask forgiveness or permission though!

Thanks for all your replies
